  • Your petition claims “Ever since Apple released their widely compatible ProRes Raw format, the world’s leading medium budget professional and semi-professional photo and video camera manufacturers, as well as video recorder manufacturers have added support for this format in the latest generation of their products.”

This implies many cameras and recorders can record this format when in fact only Atomos can and a couple of DSLRs will output a signal to allow it to be used in an Atomos recorder. This means there are very few cameras and recorders that can record this format despite it being released a year before BRAW. Can you name a single camera that records it internally?

ProResRAW has had a limited and very slow uptake. I’ve never seen it in the wild but there’s a lot of BRAW. Maybe you should petition Apple to firstly allow BRAW in FCPX and also to allow ProResRAW to be free like BRAW so Resolve can have ProResRAW for the same price as Apple can adopt BRAW in FCPX. Your petition implies Blackmagic is at fault here. Apple is the problem

  • Phase might work to some degree if the two tracks are sample accurate and you can line up the files to be sample accurate. I can’t remember of FCP7 can do audio phase reverse. I seem to remember it was possible. It might work better to import the files into a DAW where you can move the file by the sample to get the line up.

Next problem is the M&E will likely not dip where the narration & dialog are so you will have to work to replicate the level dips or the phase cancel won’t work.

    Interesting discussion thanks Oliver.

Best you have a good read of ColorTrace in the manual. Having graded one timeline, you can transfer the grades based on matching media to other timelines. There are other ways such as editing the common block of graded shots into the other timelines except for the top & tails once one is graded.

Oliver, I’ve delivered lots to broadcasters from Resolve and by setting output to Video levels, I’ve never had a tech reject for color gamut or luma levels outside broadcast safe. Resolve seems to do it without any other settings. Using Data levels you made need to set broadcast safe differently.

  • Are you saying the clips have moved or that the render is all screwed? I would start by deleting render cache and seeing if the underlying clips are correct. There might have been some corruption in the render process.

[Scot Witthaus]” 12k. I can see my clients needing that tomorrow. Not really….”

Neither I or my clients want 12k. I’ve ordered the camera however because that’s not the point.

[Steve Connor] “Although I’d read the 12K doesn’t record Prores internally?”

Since being able to record BRAW in my BMpocket4k, I have not once considered using the onboard ProRes. There is a very good reason BRAW is the only codec on the 12k. It’s actually the only codec that makes sense. ProRes can’t record above 8k and the file size for a 10 bit file is larger and far less useful in post. If it was on the 12k I have just ordered, I am sure I would never use it. No point in paying Apple a license for a codec that no longer has any need in acquisition.

[Oliver Peters]”Overall, forget about the RAW. What’s really interesting is that BMD has deviated from the “off-the-shelf” Bayer-pattern sensor design.”

BRAW is actually an integral part of the equation. It is the development of this sensor that has been part of the BRAW story. The two are inseparable which is why this new camera only records BRAW. BM see the codec as making such res possible. Imagine a 12k DNx or ProRes? It’s clear to me that BRAW is the key to this camera and the new sensor.

[Bill Davis] “one “factor” in any codec coming to a platform is the resources it takes to support an outside codec once it becomes an official part of different companies offerings. It’s apparently not a trivial thing. He mentioned that’s why Apple leaves, for example, Canon MXF Codecs as something for Canon to develop and maintain. ”

Yes Apple is unlike other NLEs in that it leaves codec and interchange support up to others. It’s lazy and indicative of an attitude that makes people like me unimpressed. If Resolve or Pr had the same attitude, collaborative workflows would be a nightmare with FCPX. Lucky for Apple others have picked up and made money from their slack.
