  • Can I use a full mix and M+E track to extract clean dialogue ?

Posted by Nick Meyers on August 1, 2020 at 8:31 am

the topic says it all really:
i have an old archived show with no dialogue stems.
there are however 2 tracks of a full mix, and 2 more tracks of an M+E.
would there be some clever phase trick to get just the dial and VO from the old film, clean of the old music ?

i can live in hope ☺

    thanks in advance.

Phase might work to some degree if the two tracks are sample accurate and you can line up the files to be sample accurate. I can’t remember of FCP7 can do audio phase reverse. I seem to remember it was possible. It might work better to import the files into a DAW where you can move the file by the sample to get the line up.

Next problem is the M&E will likely not dip where the narration & dialog are so you will have to work to replicate the level dips or the phase cancel won’t work.

    thanks, Michael.
the files aren’t phasing so i guess that means they are not sample-acuralty lined up.
and achieving that is a bit beyond what i can do in FCP (and no – FCP doesn’t offer phase reversal)
ill see if the sound team are interested in solving it.
hope you are safe n sound down in Tassie

    cheers,
