I have external composite sync going to the Decklink and the HDW. Assemble was no problem and I usually do inserts to my DVW 2000 SD digi machine all the time with the same setup. I just swapped the machines so same wiring & reference. I have also done inserts with this setup to HDW 500 and 2000 HDCam machines so this is new to this machine or perhaps 5.1.4

March 8, 2007 at 11:43 pm in reply to: timecode refresher… LTC vs. VITC

“And why there are two..? ”

Historic plus the fact that non video machines needed linear timecode to be recorded on audio channels to syncronise. VITC, although meant to match the LTC sometimes doesn’t so as a general rule, I use LTC as the prefered timecode source.

In theory, VITC should be able to pass through a video edit system like FCP but I know on my Decklink card you need to set the lines to be preserved, otherwise they don’t make the journey. Also the VITC in an edit sequence will show the original source timecode which may be useful, but certainly not wanted on a final master tape where the VITC and LTC should be identical.

I am on 5.1.4 and just did an 88 minute edit to tape via a Decklink card to HDCam. Assemble worked for me but insert not. I suspected the HDCam deck but maybe not. Are you having trouble with assemble or insert?

My habit is to hit the next edit key and then the back one frame key in rapid succesion. They are handily close on the keyboard. I agree that the better option is for FCP to mark out as the previous frame. I hate redundant key strokes and I can see no reason to mark out on the first frame of the next shot.

  • Sounds like there is a corrupt file in the new OMF. When FCP makes an OMF, it converts any non 48k file to 48k so there won’t be mixed sample rates in an FCP OMF.

Try making an OMF without the suspect file or perhaps track by track. That way you can track down the errant file and then perhaps manually load that again into Logic or FCP.

The Z1 does downconvert to DV in camera and outputs via firewire. It needs setting in the Z1 menus to downconvert.

Playback setting should be 1920 x 1080. I didn’t think the Kona card had an HDMI output but I don’t own one. Certainly no mention of it on the AJA website.

The component analog outputs from the Kona to the HD monitor should work but without any mention of the brand and specs of your monitor, I am guessing. Details on how you have connected your monitor would also be helpful. I suspect you are trying to use your graphics card. Use the Kona.

Do you have the J30 referenced? It is designed to have an external video reference.

Also you haven’t told us how you are capturing. If it is via a card (Kona/ Decklink etc) then they generate a reference video signal that should be fed to the J30. Alternatively both the J30 and FCP should be synced to an external house video generator.

Sounds like your 4.5 has Quicktime 6 installed not Quicktime 7. The main difference is the audio. Install QT7 on your 4.5 machine and you should read the audio correctly. Better still upgrade your 4.5 to 5

February 10, 2007 at 10:55 pm in reply to: Voiceover…a quick question..

The mix tool makes it possible to ride levels around a VO without laborious keyframing. The way to make this sort of thing simple is to have a mix divided into stems – music pre mix, FX pre mix, dialog pre mix so you are only riding a few faders under the VO. This is how it is done in pro audio post. FCP however has no such ability to group and route pre mixes.

A ducking device does this automatically, but the problem withing the FCP structure is defining what gets ducked by which track. I doubt it would be a useful plug in because the FCP mixer is so basic.
