My humble G5 dual 2.5 with Decklink Pro card, 4 gigs RAM and an ATTO fibre channel 4TB RAID has been doing that for two years. Uncompressed is easy on the computer but hard on the RAID. I have been capturing 1080 50i 422 uncompressed with V4.5 – V6 FCP

Use the Decklink speed disk to check your RAID speed. It will tell you if there is a problem with potential drop frames. In theory you should be fine. In my experience, a RAID that small will fill mighty quick on long form work, especially when you start to render color grades etc.

You might want to experiment with ProRes. There are heaps of posts on this so search away.

  • Using quicktime conversion, select your codec. Sorensen is a useful codec and if that suits his Tools then that is good. Motion jpeg is another choice but ask the sound post people what they prefer.

Under size make the frame size 1024 x 486 pixels. This unsqueezes the anamorphic frame. 4:3 anamorphic is normal in standard def. External monitors do the unsqueeze. Using the 1024 x ratio does the unsqueeze on a computer monitor.

You don’t need to make a DV sequence, but if you want to do that then rather than copy pasting your HDV sequence, edit it in as a nest. Copy paste will lead to all sorts of sizing issues

Everyone has said yes you can import wav to FCP. FCP works best when the sample rate is 48khz. When you have FCP then you have both quicktime and a mac.

When you export from Vegas you can export wav or aif and the sample rate should be 48khz. Simple. I am sure Vegas can convert if your files are not 48khz. Most likely is that they are 48khz. That is the standard for files in video editing.

Many distributors at the last SMPTE show in Australia were saying that they were seriously doubting the future of trade shows.

Most people who turn up know everything already from the net and so launching something has become unnecessary. If Apple have chosen to skip NAB, I would think the most obvious reason is that trade shows take time and resources away from the product to sell something that sells itself on the net now.

I have enjoyed Henny Penny’s falling sky in this thread though.

Not only does FCP import wav files, the later versions of FCP (vers 5 onwards from memory) even recognise broadcast wav files and read the embedded timecode.

Lyric have a free plugin called Shadow highlight. It is a great little plug and simple to use that does an excellent job of lifting poorly lit footage and making it seem like a fill light has been turned on. It also had saturation and contract settings within the plug so it is a very useful filter to put before the standard 3 way CC.

I use this plugin a lot on docos, plus the 3 way and Nattress gamma plugins to get a lot of classy punch into flat poorly lit scenes.

If you are using Decklink then make sure you have the latest drivers. I had the same error on an older driver version which fixed itself after installing latest drivers.

Also I assume you have reference video going to FCP & the digi deck.

  • My 2cents – everything I have delivered to PAL broadcasters in Australia and Europe has been 1080 50i. This includes a HDcam shoot that was 25psf.

To my knowledge there is not an issue with progressive material that is wrapped in a 1080 50i tape delivery, regardless of originating format. To that end I always online in 1080 50i sequences. I haven’t had any 720p jobs delivered yet. It seems most producers here shoot 1080 50i or 1080 25psf.

Perhaps your client needs to explain why he can pay for 40% of the finished product and ignore the 60% which is a professional sound track.

It is the cheapest way to put value into any program so short changing on a proper sound mix speaks of ignorance and inexperience. As a sound professional that also grades & onlines, I can tell you that the issue is not software but operator both for grading and sound post. No-one questions it in grading so why do they refuse to accept the importance of sound?

Automatic Duck make software to convert an AVID aaf export to FCP sequence. I have used it with great success on HDV projects which were reloaded from tape. I don’t know if relinking P2 files is a problem and also it might be possible to transfer media from the AVID, but someone with P2 experience will need to clarify.
