Thanks for the info and offer, Dennis. I’m covered for the time being. How are you doing? It would be fun to stay in touch, if you like. I’m on Facebook/Messenger. Or e-mail. Michael

Hi Dennis – Are you Dennis from SAIC? In any case, thanks for the advice. I ended up getting the 20 files fixed via a Danish company https://aeroquartet.com/treasured/index.en.html. It took a few trials, but we got the files repaired. <font face=”inherit”>They said that ..the files were missing the moov atom (the “brain” of the video) and all the frame tables. They needed to be fully reindexed. It cost me $100., but saved me a lot of time, given my level of technical </font>expertise.<font face=”inherit”> I had help from Larry Jordan, as well. We tried going through Handbrake, exporting mp4. I’ve made note of Stellar, in case I have similar issues in </font>there<font face=”inherit”> future.</font>

I’m trying to re-import a .mov file in FCP7. The file doesn’t play in QT movie on my MBP 2009 or my MBP 2020. It does play with VLC player, but it’s stretched horizontally. I can import the file into FCP7, but it just shows up as white in the viewer and it does connect with the corresponding clip. Any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks, David. That seems to apply just to the viewer canvas. I’m talking about the entire screen. Here are some related links. The first is about Adobe Premiere, but same issue.

Hello ,
So I recovered my lost media (pricey). I tidied up my source media and I’m now trying to reconstruct my FCP projects with lots of problems. The media won’t stay reconnected. And I’m getting error messages: (1) File attribute mismatch (box 1attached). I try again and it goes through (no conflicts). I reconnect the files. But when I close and reopen the project, I need to reconnect the same media again.
Problem 2: When I try to locate a video file, FCP looks for video files, but all the video files are greyed out (see box 2) I choose “all files”, then all files are available and I can do the connection.
Finally, after I connect some files, I get this (box 3). I barely recognize the names, but they have nothing to do with the few files I’ve connected as far as I can tell).
Any help would be appreciated. I may need to get someone to visit in person to solve all this (Montreal).
Looking ahead, I’ll have a much more robust back up plan. Then I’ll retire my 2009 MBP and make the leap to FCP X.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Nick,
Thanks for your thoughtful, detailed answer. I may …have the files on another old 4 TB G-raid drive, with mainly a hardware vs. software problem.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893269-REG/G_Technology_0g02484_4TB_G_Raid_Dual_Drive.html
I’ve been told that my chances of recovering files with names, in their directories, are better on that drive. As you may know, data recovery (from the platters) is really pricey. About $900 in my case. They don’t charge if the results aren’t what I need. So I’m going to bite the bullet, pay the cash and see what happens. If this doesn’t work, I’ll go back to the original problem drive and have a good look at what you suggest.
And, of course, I’ll be more careful with back ups in future (external drives, the cloud). I thought I was being careful. My main media drive seemed to be working fine. But I rarely checked my FCP projects, as I’m not actively editing. So I was backing up the empty folder / missing files problem. Live and learn.
