Hi Bill,
Do you know anyone who can confirm this for sure? It does sound a bit like an assumption, and I want to be real sure before upgrading, if I must at all. I’d have no other reason to for the time being, being very happy with 4.5, and just the Playback View issue is a small reason for a big move. I guess HD would take me there eventually, but that’s not on my schedule right now. Thanks in advance.

December 4, 2008 at 12:24 am in reply to: Did my external monitor issue get forgotten?Hi Chris,
Like I responded to Marc above, I tried opening a project that uses an external disk in order to ignite a firewire device like you suggested, just in case. Alas to no avail. With my PB G4 I didn’t need a firewire device to be able to choose screens from my Video Playback menu. Occasionally I used a dv-camera firewire-piggy-backed to my external disk in order to view on a 3rd screen, usually for the comfort of smooth viewing during capture. But not in this case. You see our dilemma? Marc and I can’t choose from your 2, 3 and 4 options because they just won’t show up. What FCP version are you on? Would you suspect a conflict between 4.5 and the MBP, the DVI connection or OS 10.5.5 or something? Thanks for your help!

December 4, 2008 at 12:12 am in reply to: Did my external monitor issue get forgotten?Hi Marc,
Okay, so our only difference is your MacPro vs. my MacBook Pro. But our problems are identical. We’re both on the 4.5 HD version (in my case working on SD), we both use a DVI port, neither of our Video Preview drop-downs reveal the existence of an external monitor, right? So we can’t follow Chris Poisson’s last advice at the bottom of the thread because his number 2, 3 and 4 settings do not show up in our drop-downs. That’s our issue. I’ll respond to Chris below as well, especially with the firewire device thing he mentioned.I thought he had me there! Indeed, I’m working on an unusually small project and exceptionally using my internal hard disk for my media, so no firewire device is connected. I thought that might have been it, so I fired up a project using an external hard disk like I usually do, but the result is the same. When I go into the A/V settings > Summary, by the way, here too only the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main appears in the Video Playback drop-down menu. In other words, we need more help!
Thanks folks.

December 3, 2008 at 10:38 pm in reply to: Did my external monitor issue get forgotten?Bob, thanks for your input, but I haven’t even tried HD yet. I’m only confronted with SD for the time being. Is your idea still relevant?
Also, in the longer run, as soon as I get this menu to show me my other screen, I’ll also want to look into hooking up an additional screen, i.e; a 2nd external monitor. I hear bits and pieces about a Matrox. Are they referring to the MXO2? Would a DVI splitter (very cheap) only provide me with a mirrored image on both externals? My Mac shop here in Hamburg (very efficient, actually), claims additionally that in order for my MacBook Pro to handle 2 external screens, the screens must be identical in model and size. Anyone know about that?
Greetings from Hamburg and thanks again.

December 3, 2008 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Did my external monitor issue get forgotten?Gentlemen, in response to all: I just purchased the MBP a month ago, but the previous model, just a week before the new one came out. I only have 1 DVI port.
Marc, does the new one have 2, in order to hook up 2 external monitors? Your A/V Devices, as far as I know, have nothing to do with the previewing. They only apply to hardware like a camera, a recorder or disks. PS: Don’t go back to PC!
Shane, just like Marc, I have it set to Digital Cinema Preview, but only ‘main’, the primary laptop screen, is available in the dropdown menu. That’s the whole problem.
Ben, I even tried to see if it would work with mirroring on. It doesn’t. The problem is really that FCP does not want to recognize the second screen in the drop-down View menu, whereas it does for the rest of the program. The dual screen layouts work fine. It ALL worked fine with the same screen and my G4 Powerbook. I suspect it has something to do with DVI port, but Shane says his works fine… I also thought about my old 4.5 version, but why yes on the G4 and no on MBP? Your shot in the dark about HDCP sounds rather dark to me, but I have yet to check that out.
Everyone: Thanks for keeping thinking!

Thanks Rafael, that did the trick. iMovie is way too far in the past for me. MPEGStramclip worked perfectly, quick and easy. Thanks again!

December 1, 2008 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Great solution for adding 3rd monitor without FCP going nuts! Thanks for this interesting information. One question though, the ebay description calims operating systems Windows XP and Vista only. Does this affect us mac users?

Hi Tyrell, since I’m having trouble getting FCP 4.5 to recognize my external monitor (exactly as you are succeeding, through the View menu), I stumbled over your post; could it be that your preview monitor settings are set to Alpha instead of RGB? When I turn the canvas settings to alpha, I get a white screen. Good luck.

December 1, 2008 at 12:34 pm in reply to: Digital Cinema Desktop on 2nd monitor disappearedI have the same problem, Jaap, since I switched to MacBook Pro, with FCP 4.5. I tried your trick, but it didn’t work. FCP Viewer functionality does not recognize my external screen, nor my tube (which go alternatively into the same port). FCP does recognize it for dual-screen workflow, of course, and I can put the canvas wherever I want, but not for full-screen viewing elsewhere than on the MBP. Command F12 is only a shortcut to open full screen viewing, but of course here again, only on the screen available in the dropdown menu– hence no external monitor! I even tried to reconnect the monitor using its analogue input, put to no avail.
Any more ideas?

Since you folks seem to know so much about the MBP-external monitor combination issue, can one of you answer the following?: I recently switched from a G4 PB to a 15″ MBP and of course I’m as happy as can be, except… my Fujitsu W19 screen works fine with the MBP, but my FCP 4.5 does not recognize it in the View > Video Playback settings, which was not the case with the G4. This means I can only view full screen on the MBP, neither the W19 nor my Sony tube that I use for color will do the trick. FCP no longer recognizes more than Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main. Does this have something to do with the new MBP external monitor connection hub (vs. G4)? Or is it because I’m using the digital input on my external monitor? Thanks for your advice, Michael
