David…we changed to four-track output in both places you suggested and got the video to export with the desired four tracks, HOWEVER, the resulting file was even smaller than before! We did get an error message after setting FCP to export four tracks that read:

The current audio device does not support the number of outputs set in the Sequence Settings Audio Outputs tab. Unsupported outputs will not be heard during playback on this machine unless downmixed to Stereo.

Tried an export once with downmixing, once without and that yielded the same results each time (a file size even smaller than before). Any help would be, as it has been thus far, greatly appreciated.

When we import the file into Final Cut, it has 4 tracks of audio, and is exported that way. When we re-import the file that has just been exported, it is down to 2 audio tracks. We’ve adjusted the outputs to 4 in the audio settings, and this prompt comes up. We’ve both selected and deselected the downmixing, and either way end up with 2 audio tracks and a drop in file size.

PS- The files are small. The captured file is ~2.5 GB and the file we get after the export through FCP is ~1.8 GB. Roughly a four minute clip.

We are capturing from our deck through a Blackmagic Decklink to one system’s scratch disk (~1 TB of free space, 3.6 TB total size) and then another computer accesses the file through the network, and on that second machine it is edited and exported to Machine #2s internal hard drive (~500 GB).

Thanks for the reply! We’ve been exporting exactly that way and the Pro Res file we get out of FCP is still roughly 30% smaller than the one we started with. We’ve also tried exporting multiple files via Batch Export with the same results, a ~30% drop in file size.

A simple question…is there a setting in Final Cut that would allow me to export a Pro Res file that’s the same size as the Pro Res file we’re starting with?

    Hi Dave and All,

I spoke too soon. We have tried importing Apple Pro Res HQ 422 files (about 5 minutes) into Final Cut and immediately export them and are still seeing the 30% file size drop.

Going back to your original email Dave,I have a dumb question for you: where do we change the timing settings? We’ve set the sequence settings, but can’t seem to adjust anything that would adjust what you refer to as timeline settings. They’re not the same as sequence, correct?

We are making the IMX50 in Final Cut.

Our client is requesting both Apple Pro Res 422 HQ and IMX50 as their file outputs. We are using a Blackmagic Decklink HD card.
