I think you’re right that it isn’t possible in Encore. I did; however, get it to work in DVD Studio Pro using custom scripts. Does Encore support scripts to change button, menu, and track functionality?

If you are a tutorial learning type person “Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book” is a good place to start. It comes with a disc that includes the same images the book uses as examples and walks you step-by-step through each tutorial. The first couple of chapters outlines what each tool does and how it is used and then moves on from there. It’s a good book to “make you dangerous”.

If you come from a traditional photography background, another great book is “Max Ferguson’s Digital Darkroom Masterclass”. It is a much more advanced book, but explains the tools in Photoshop by equating them to traditional darkroom techniques. This book is not going to “teach” you Photoshop, but is great in terms of the theory and principles as to why certain tools work the way they do.

Both books run anywhere from $30-$50, depending on where you buy them.

In Photoshop, I’ve found that setting the layer to Multiply might not always result in the color expected (ie: yellow circle under blue gives you a black center). To make the center green, I put the yellow circle on the bottom layer with the blue circle on the top layer, overlapping the yellow. I set the blue circle layer to color burn. Now that turns the center green, but makes the rest of the blue circle disappear. To get around this, duplicate your blue circle layer (make it just a normal layer) and set it on top of where the blue circle was. While on the yellow circle layer, use the magic wand tool to make a selection around the yellow circle. Change layers to the top blue circle and erase away the blue that is selected to reveal green.
