For encoding FCX is taking great advantage of quick sync where PP is not. Same with effects like image stabilization. FCX is using alms or 100% of CPU and almost 100% of GPU where PP is about 10% CPU and 20ish (if I remember right) percent of CPU.
I edited with PP for years but after learning FCX it’s hard to go back. I only use PP when clients require it.

Ppro using media encoder, CBR (same speed if you use 1 pass) H.264 same bitrates.
I don’t really know what else to say, same exact files (from GH4, H.264 as .MP4) same effects.
The test was meant to compare the two laptops, not really for comparing the two NLE’s but interesting results to share.

FCX is definitely preferred for a macbook, If you don’t believe me check out my recent test comparing the 2014 Macbook Pro to the 2015. FCX is WAY faster than Ppro on this laptop.
My suggestion is to somehow scrape up $750 and get the 2014 MacbookPro thats on sale on B&H for $1999 with a previous price of $2500. You’ll get larger screen, QuadCore i7 CPU (same one in 2015) 16GB ram, 2GB 750M GPU, 512GB SSD.
This way you will not have to update soon, and it should do the job for a long while, even if you go to 4k. The i7 and dedicated GPU will really speed up rendering. If I was in your position I would do whatever it takes to make this happen. Sometimes it’s about making the smarter decision, which is to spend 1/3 more money for 2X+ the performance.
B&H has Paypal 0% interest for 6 months. Can you afford to pay $125 month for 6 months 0 interest? If not open a 12 or 18 month 0% interest credit card and pay $63 or $39 a month. You’ll have a faster system and you won’t pay interest for the financing. I would get creative.. Maybe go through your garage/storage and sell a few things that you haven’t used in a long while. Why stop “Funds” from making you take longer to do your job. Is this editing job paying you? Overall you’ll save time and money getting a better machine right now then getting a slower machine and then selling it to buy another one.

Those still interested, here is my test between my $5000 new MacPro (6core, D700 graphics) VS a $3000 iMac 5k (i7,4GB M295x). Very interesting results, especially in FCX! If you want the short version, the 5K iMac is faster in FCX in most tests, and in Ppro its about 90-100% performance of the MacPro depending what your doing. Also keep in mind for the money you get a gorgeous display, keyboard/mouse where the MacPro comes with the cylinder and a power cable.

Nvida VS AMD graphics results.I ran the same tests on a $5000 (tax included) 6 Core Mac Pro with D700 Graphics as well as a 5K iMac with M295X (best option) GPU and i7 4790K CPU (best option). Also included is my $1300 Mackintosh.

Can’t really help with the issues you’re having with CUDA, other than suggesting to reinstall the latest version of CC, and update/reinstall CUDA drivers. I have been using them and it’s been fine for me. I just tested the latest 2015 MBP compared to the 2014 with 750M (basically rebadged 650) and CUDA works quite a bit faster 20-30% compared to OpenCL on the same laptop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecqVGeocgSo

My Mac Pro (now sold) was a 6 core with D700 graphics, 256GB PCI-SSD, 16GB ram. When ordering it I knew that the extra GPU power would help so I opted to spend the extra $ and wait time.
This testing really opened my eyes and made me more curious as the iMac seems to be very quick at rendering. I just build a hackintosh using the same CPU as in the iMac (with much better cooling of course) as well as a fairly quick SSD (not a bottleneck) 16GB RAM, and GTX 970 GPU. The 970 GPU should be much more powerful than the M295X (just like the D700’s are) but my results were very similar to the Mac Pro times. I also tested this same build with the 750Ti, 960, and 980 and the render times are almost identical as the 970.
This is because the GPU’s are almost never fully utilized. I also have a R9 285 and 290X to test but unfortunately I can’t get them to boot. I REALLY wish AMD would provide OSX drivers like Nvidia does. The 290X is the most powerful single GPU AMD makes, and the R9 285 is the second newest card after the M295X and the M295X may be based off of the architecture so I was really hoping to try it and see if the results are similar.
It really seems that FCX is taking full advantage of the M295X and is using it much more efficiently that other cards, even though those are more powerful. After doing all this testing there is really no other explanation, as I’m using the same CPU now with Quicksync. It would be amazing to see a M295X or a slightly slower version of it in a new Macbook Pro 15″ (or 17″).
