    Hello all,
long time reader here, first time poster.
So I’m looking into buying a new computer soon,
and the 5K Imac gets my attention,
but I’m wondering about it’s performance:
can any of you who actually work with it day to day chime in?
    I’m particularly interested in knowing
if the display doesn’t take too many ressources
    from the graphics card?
Does the computer respond well with for instance
After Effects or Da Vinci Resolve,
which are pretty demanding GPU wise?
What about working with FCP X?
    Is the GUI responsive?

Really appreciate all your thoughts on this.
Since Apple discontinued the high end non retina 27″ Imac
with the 4Gb GPU it seems like you have to get
the highest specced 5k Imac in order to get
    a powerful computer from them,
but the price is quite hefty,
so, is it worth it for you?

    Thanks again!

Yep it’s great- screen is solid and performance good. However, that said it cannot compete with the higher end CPU/GPU options on the Mac Pro if you want ultimate firepower.

Actually, if you want “ultimate firepower” you’d have to switch to another platform.

used one for a couple of weeks, cutting in premiere and doing some AE – for what I was doing it was great, and it was an i7 with 16GB and a 2GB radeon? i think apparently there is an overhead to drive the display, it’s maybe best to stack up the specs – but everything is worth it for that display.

My 5K IMac handles everything I throw at it. 6-8 K photo images open in a snap. 4K plays back beautifully and I edit with 1080P, UHD and 4K H.265 footage.

I have a fully loaded 5K iMac from back in December.

If you want to go full bore, check out my friends at FCPWorks and their system solutions.

The IMac 5K is a very good computer and the screen is gorgeous.

Facebook is the only thing that gives me an occasional spinning beach ball.

    Good luck

    Which platform would that be?

Interested in what you suggest suggest by switching platform? As I’m looking for advanced video data flow solutions. Moving 10’s TB of data from multiple editors between continents to and from mainly FCP X users but also VFX.

Ultimate FCPX firepower was my implication. If you want the ultimate firepower, get the Death Star.

    Thanks!
Sure, I know the mac pro is better,
if you get at least the mid range one,
but then again, the price is also pretty higher –
if you consider you must also get a screen –
and one I’m not sure I can afford right now.
    But maybe a refurb?
Also, it seems like it may get refreshed later this year,
so also waiting to see what they come up with, if anything.

Yeah, I’m not going for “ultimate firepower”,
    I know you can do better than Imacs for that;
    just a good powerful computer
that will handle occasionally heavy jobs
    but mostly light stuff.
Not that I wouldn’t go higher end
if money wasn’t to be considered…

[Anders Utterstrom] “Which platform would that be?”

Windows or Linux if you depend heavily on CPU bound tasks like simulations and 3D rendering – applications like that will benefit immensely from having as many fast cores in a machine as possible. For newer GPU based renderers like Octane or Furry ball, the ability to stick three or four powerful video cards in a machine can cut the process of look development and final render down from weeks to days. For editors… it probably doesn’t make much difference.

I do seem to read everywhere the display is fantastic,
haven’t gone out to see one yet,
    but what about reflections?
On older Imacs this was definitely an issue,
but I know they’ve gotten better.
    What was your impression?
Was it comfortable to work with
even in a well lit room?
