    And since I’m still here,
    another question:
    what about heating?
Do the fans kick off very often/easily?
I know Imacs often heat up quickly
    and then can get noisy,
but I’ve also become used to that,
so it’s not such a big deal for me,
just curious to know if they’ve made progress on that front also,
    especially driving that monster display!!!

Fan noise on iMac & Mac Pro is non-existent compared to most Macs I’ve ever used.

    No, there is no noise.

Well, besides me blasting old Swedish punk like Ebba Grön.

Mauricio, now hit the button and buy the machine -:) Come back here, for any follow-up questions.

Spanish or Italian? M.? I’m obviously Swedish -:)

    Agreed on the mac pro,
    that thing is unbelievably quiet!
But what you say about the imac
    is even more impressive,
    having to drive that display
    and doing it quietly, wow!

[Mauricio Lleras] “I do seem to read everywhere the display is fantastic,
haven’t gone out to see one yet,
    but what about reflections?
On older Imacs this was definitely an issue,
but I know they’ve gotten better.
    What was your impression?
Was it comfortable to work with
even in a well lit room?”

yes it’s super comfortable – it’s a print density display around two feet wide on the diagonal.

    Thanks for all your answers!
great to see it’s working so well for everyone,
it definitely has quieted down some of my concerns.
Now I’ll wait nonetheless to see what they come up with in the fall,
as I think there are good chances for both a Mac Pro
and an Imac refresh…Well, at least I hope so,
    time will tell!

The only noise you will be dealing are external chassis e.g. Thunderbolt and RAID drives.
I have a 2012 Mac Pro right beside a 2013 trust me I can make the 2013 kit louder by just turning on all the externals.

As of 3 days ago I can now comment on this thread with absolute authority in that I’m now the owner of a 5K iMac. I chose a special build with the 4 GHz Intel Core i7 and AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB.

I had been waiting for the next iteration of this well reviewed machine but here it is on my desktop working just fine. The 5k display is gorgeous and flatters everything you put on it and with the new processor FCPX rendering time has definitely speeded up.

What prompted me to buy the machine now rather than waiting for the next upgrade was that I had both a Samsung 28″ UHD monitor hoping to have 4K on the cheap only to discover, due to lack of research that it would only work on newer machines than my 2012 27″ iMac, so that prompted me to click the the buy button.

So the 2 screens work very well together, the Apple screen is obviously higher quality but the Samsung U28D590 is remarkably good value. At the moment my 4K acquisition and editing is limited to GoPro 4, DJI Inspire and Sony RX10 11 but it is a pretty addictive resolution and I’m hoping to upgrade my C300 to the Mk2 version in the autumn.

Likewise I pulled the trigger on a 5K iMac last week with the same specs 4 ghz i7 and the better GPU. This I mac is a really sweet machine…. and I’m about to start hammering on it with a hefty doc project using lots of different formats and codec. Here we go….

Those still interested, here is my test between my $5000 new MacPro (6core, D700 graphics) VS a $3000 iMac 5k (i7,4GB M295x). Very interesting results, especially in FCX! If you want the short version, the 5K iMac is faster in FCX in most tests, and in Ppro its about 90-100% performance of the MacPro depending what your doing. Also keep in mind for the money you get a gorgeous display, keyboard/mouse where the MacPro comes with the cylinder and a power cable.
