First, I really appreciate the very detailed and knowledgable response you gave me. Very much appreciated.

I have been experementing. interestingly there does not seem to be an ADVANCED tab when exporting PDF x/1a 2001, as there is with ID.

But after saving my version of X/1a as a preset in ID, I see that it is available in PS PDF settings.

I wonder, even if the ADVANCED tab is not available, if those setting “tick” the boxes when writing the PDF?

An example from Sheridan Press’s PDF requirements:

My PS doc, has Type layers. I converted to CMYK anbd saved as a PSD. brought into ID. Created my trim and bleeds.

I followed the printers specs for the PDF options.

Do the type layers from PS in the PSD, remain as type (non rastered) within ID?

Also when the file is exported as a PDF do the live text remain type or get flattened/rastered?

I ask because the preview in ID does not look great? If I zoom in the text looks bitmapped rather than postscript?

I just have no way to tell until hearing back from the publisher.

I don’t really want to rebuild the text layers in ID.

Thank you. That was the exact info I needed. I’ll have to play with placing the AI file. I may be wrong but experimenting with saving as AI, or Exporting as a rasterized PS file, I found the colors better with the export and antialiazing.

In any event this worked. I wanted to keep the somewhat ragged edge from the IA object, without messing around wqith the magic wand or quick mask that did not give me a pixel perfect clipping.

My last attempt was to make the AI file black in Illustrator and bring it in a second time as a mask.

You’d think Illustrator would allow an alpha channel when you export the vector.

Thank you. I’ll give it a try. I had been experimenting with a tentacle tutorial where an emitter with turbulence used a tracer. I got that far.

My main goal was to set this up, and play with deformers/ effectors to play around and sculpt different versions to be printed.

I’m still not sure about coloring the segments or dashes randomly but with the solid defined color pallet.

lets simplify this, if I created a single “tentacle” and the length has20 segments. I want to apply 5 specific colors, to the segments randomly. I could use some help how to do this. Because, how ever I get to the series of strings, I will need to color them properly. And I’d like to be able to change the randomness if I don’t like the order it generated. Like changing the seed.

I tried the PDF X1a to convert all the color spaces to the CMYK for the ptrinter, But I found some 5% black to appear magentaish oon screen at least. So I don’t think that was a great output option.

Again the problem is getting many different source files, formats with a short deadline and layout and get the doc to the printer.

But if you are correct, that i should have taken the time to run everything through PS then lsy out in Indesign.

Could you give an example of the steps.

I have some High res Tiffs from a digital camera, some processed PDFs with a image file I need to use. Various web based JPG, PNG images.

So I convert all to Tiff AdobRGB. In this example this doc will be printed on a press. So would I do my CMYK conversion in PS?

Lay everything out in InDesign, and output the PDF with out any conversion, to prserve the work done in PS?

I did delivery the native file to the printer. Is it safer (without have a specific printer profile to target) to let them prep the file to their press?

By the way. With CMYK having a smaller color gamut, would youi also soft proof in PS to CMYK, make adjustments before going to ID?

The problem is having crazy deadlines, and relying on InDesign’s ability to “fix” any problems on output.

For me, I use a 3mm bleed in the document set-up. Pretty easy to do.

The reason I was thinking AE was the scripting ability. Though not exactly what I was thinking about. The script mechanically show it can be done.
