Thanks to all of your help & suggestions.

I should have mentioned that the “link/unlink” button in the upper right corner of the timeline had no effect.

But what fixed it is trashing the prefs. I should have tried it before posting.

It’s very nice that some of you have never had to trash prefs, and I do aspire to live such a chaste and blessed life as yourselves, but both Apple FCP tech support people and AJA/io tech support people have suggested that technique in the past for misc. problems and it HAS worked. It’s certainly not something I like to do since I have to rebuild custom settings, but as debe says, sometimes I just have get back to editing ASAP and can’t afford the time to thoroughly troubleshoot.
