Maybe your best option would be to export
a full resolution master file of your edit,
take that into resolve and then do a scene detection cut there…
    Good luck

    Mike,
a wild shot here, but folders in SAN can have permission problems
    when multiple users access it,
maybe that could be causing difficulties for fcpx relinking properly?
Try and tell the guys getting the footage
to verify if folders on the SAN where files you send get stored have all
proper read and write permissions before relinking.
I’m sure they must have thought about this already,
and maybe it’s not the problem at all,
    but might be worth checking….
It does seem odd that Jeremy and others seem to be able to do this routinely
without hiccups and others no, so maybe their SAN is the culprit…
Good luck anyway, hope it gets sorted out!

[David Powell] “Its extremely annoying that I can’t do it in X”

David, sorry to burst in, but I am wondering,
couldn’t you just make a compound clip of the project
you wish to use as a source clip?
You would then be able to skim it and edit unto your main project from it…
I know visually it’s not the same as two open timelines,
but it’s pretty similar to Avid/FCP7 ‘s loading of timelines into the source monitor.
Regarding markers I’m guessing it wouldn’t inherit previous markers in the project
like Avid or FCP7 do (I’m not in front of X),
but you could always create your compound clip first thing
and then place markers on it…
Please correct me if I’m wrong,
I follow X closely but am mainly on FCP 7 and Avid.

    Mark and Mark,
    congrats on the new machines!
Be interested in hearing from you guys once you
really start putting them through the hoops!

  • What about opening the sync clip in it’s own timeline,
    (open in timeline command),
then looking up the starting timecode of the video,
    finding the corresponding timecode
in the original clip with the markers
and then overwriting video only to the sync clip?
A bit cumbersome but should work no?
Of course, a simple matchframe from the sync clip
would be easier but I believe that doesn’t work,
(won’t take you back to the original clip),
of course I could be wrong.
I’m not a big X user but hope this idea could help you.
    Please keep us posted!

    Thanks for all your answers!
great to see it’s working so well for everyone,
it definitely has quieted down some of my concerns.
Now I’ll wait nonetheless to see what they come up with in the fall,
as I think there are good chances for both a Mac Pro
and an Imac refresh…Well, at least I hope so,
    time will tell!

    Agreed on the mac pro,
    that thing is unbelievably quiet!
But what you say about the imac
    is even more impressive,
    having to drive that display
    and doing it quietly, wow!

    And since I’m still here,
    another question:
    what about heating?
Do the fans kick off very often/easily?
I know Imacs often heat up quickly
    and then can get noisy,
but I’ve also become used to that,
so it’s not such a big deal for me,
just curious to know if they’ve made progress on that front also,
    especially driving that monster display!!!

I do seem to read everywhere the display is fantastic,
haven’t gone out to see one yet,
    but what about reflections?
On older Imacs this was definitely an issue,
but I know they’ve gotten better.
    What was your impression?
Was it comfortable to work with
even in a well lit room?

Yeah, I’m not going for “ultimate firepower”,
    I know you can do better than Imacs for that;
    just a good powerful computer
that will handle occasionally heavy jobs
    but mostly light stuff.
Not that I wouldn’t go higher end
if money wasn’t to be considered…
