No and I do not know what a DAR file is (YET!). I have the DVD and that is it.

Although I consider myself pretty green at all this, I have been using Vegas Studio Plat to edit some pretty complicated projects as a learning experience and it works fantastic. I haven’t crashed it yet, either. I have used many of the tools, many of the effects, both track and toolwise, chromakey, etc. all kinds of keyframing and highly recommend a second monitor for previewing because the clutter will frustrate you as you attempt to learn. There are obviously many, many docking windows and you need to know how to GRAB them and move them. Print out ALL the shortcuts and review / GO OVER THEM and TEST THEM, and I believe this is CRITICAL, as I keep these on my desk and refer to them ALL the time when I am editing. You want to know all the track height shortcuts because there is so much clutter. Also important is to play around with the trim / slip trim /slide crossfade operations at least a little so you see how Vegas handles clips. Go over cursor placement shortcuts (there’s like 20 of these), event selection plus find your top controls and play around with all the edit ripple modes, an incorrect track edit here will KILL you if you don’t have it set right.) The workflow is getting clips on the timeline, remember plat handles 4 tracks video or audio max, I personally find the trimmer very handy, becoming very familiar with the shortcuts, play around with track envelopes, clip & audio effects, transitions, how to select regions & loop, rendering, and yes the SONY online help is pretty limited, just keep doing this and after 2-3 weeks you will become more comfortable with this massive NLE……………
ALSO, WHY are you moving away from PREMIERE?

1) I can drop .vob files directly onto the timeline, they seem to be MPEG-2! Whew, this seems much quicker than anything else! Any problem editing these directly and then rendering these / burning these to DVD? Yes I do see you mention that AVI is much faster to edit……….
2) I attempt to import VOB files directly (import media), click to do it, it just moves it to the all media folder instantaneously, which seems to do the exact same thing as (1) above.
3) I attempt to CAPTURE an entire DVD, it dies after doing the first tiny 2.5 minute trailer which is essentially the first .vob file (taking 45 minutes to do so) THIS SEEMS like it would take a HUGE amount of time, many HOURS to import the entire DVD!
4) I do not see the advantage in doing an .AVI capture, obviously it’s got to decompress / compress gigabytes of data….what am I not getting here…again, any general resources that discuss this more fully……….

Well as usual this is a working post, found out you can directly paste .VOB files, who knew, it’s certainly not in any of the SONY help topics! Ok, while I can obviously directly edit .VOB files, my take is that this is not what I want to do, probably I need to render these to some other intermediate and then EDIT THOSE, is there a blog I can refer to for this? **I see I cannot directly import .VOB files- NOTHING happens. WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL PROCEDURE HERE TO EDIT A FULL LENGTH MOVIE PLUS TRAILER ON DVD, MAKE EDITS AND THEN RE-BURN USING DVD ARCHITECT…….BASED ON MY EARLIER POST. IMPORT appears to DIE after reading the first VOB file which is the trailer….Is there a newer book out for Sony Vegas that discusses all these tricks, how-to’s and CODECS in depth? Thanks.

Here’s a good one: Does the quality of a video card affect the capture? I currently have a very basic 128 MB Nvidia Card, if I upgraded to 256 or more MB would this AFFECT capture resolution? Would VEGAS / rendering run faster? Curious, and thanks!

Ok somebody is going to burn my master which is on mini DV to DVD. If I get that DVD, will I also load it into Sony Vegas by again capturing it, or are there other possibilities?

Will there be loss of signal when you capture digital?

I have to say this about sony vegas platinum – within 5-6 weeks I have become pretty proficient at using this software, it has never crashed on me, the output is consistent and the interface as a whole is excellent with so many many tools to get exactly what I want; plus I have audacity going so I can do realtime effects and manipulation in that. You can set it up / dock it any way you want. This is very robust software. obviously sony put a lot of $$ into this and for 125 bucks I sure can’t complain. Any word if version 9 is around the corner? And thanks for all your input…………….

Well sure, you’re dealing with CODECS, they’re ALL compressed, so is this the nature of the beast, is there any way to optimize this? Should I have 2 gigs of RAM plus? Sure seems so! Yes I understand, this whole process is massively CPU BOUND as they say computer wise……….
But an HOUR to do five minutes? Ooooooh!
