November 10, 2010 at 7:13 pm in reply to: Rotate all objects in sync with one anotherAndy, that seems like a very easy way to achieve this effect, played around with it briefly. I would be rotating the Y axis, so going from left to right, and yeah that seems like it would work. The Point At behaviour is not something I’ve used before, cool thanks!
But I’m knee deep in this thing now, see pic below
So I’ve got 5 objects, they spin around that white particle halo, so with camera and a light the objects get fuzzy and dim as they make their way to the back. (note: camera and light turned off in screenshot above)
I’m moving them with a Motion Path on each object, which means they’re easy to move as a group if I need to retime them to the talking head, and I can also reposition them very easily that way as a group, so that for each new turn, the objects are nicely arranged together. The Top view helps a lot with this.
thanks for your tips, next time!

November 8, 2010 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Rotate all objects in sync with one anotherThat’s an interesting idea, hadn’t thought of it. Would just be a matter of setting or keyframing each object so that they face forward at all times.
Well maybe next time, have decided to go with an all keyframing method in 3D space with camera. I created a ring for a guide track and tilted it back so that it’s almost horizontal to ground, placed each object on ring, moving each in conjunction with each other manually. Deadline is looming so this seemed to be the best solution, gives me the most control.
thanks for your input,

November 5, 2010 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Rotate all objects in sync with one anotherWait, I suppose I could export the spinning objects, bring them back in, then apply Set Speed. But no, can’t do that, might need to have the objects ‘react’ a little when they’re the focus.

November 5, 2010 at 7:07 pm in reply to: Rotate all objects in sync with one anotherThanks Stephen that does a good job of getting those objects moving around an invisible circle, …but now it’s a matter of pressing pause and having the whole orbit come to a nice soft stop, after each quarter turn.
I played around with the Custom speed option for the Motion Path, but can’t get a soft landing. I grouped all of the objects and tried a behaviour on that group, like Hold Frame or Set Speed, but they can’t be applied. May have to split the motion path into four sections, dunno,
thanks,

Aha, yes, very smart. Particles will be heading the right direction, and the hold frame behaviour will let me freeze on the frame I want.
Cool, thanks for your help!

Excellent, that does the trick. Think I was thinking too hard about this one, solution is quite simple.
Thanks fellas, always enjoy your tutorials,

I figured out what’s going on here. When I export to Motion from Syntheyes, I end up with a camera that’s mimicking the move within the footage, so no linking or match moving is required. Once I flatten my new graphics onto the X axis, they automatically move with the footage because that’s what the camera is set to do. The only troubleshooting is getting your graphic in the right spot so that it doesn’t drift.
Not trying to attach a mask anymore, just creating a new group, creating a shape within that group, then repositioning. The matte shape ‘mask’s the original newspaper headline, at which point I can use the text tool to create a new one. Also have to reposition the text at that point.
Actually very easy, Syntheyes is a wicked program.
Should have spent more time playing around before posting, but thanks anyway!

That’s perfect, it’s the simple elegant solution I was looking for, thanks very much. I had played around with the Set Speed behaviour but hadn’t been able to master the controls.
thanks again,

I ran it on some T2i clips and was happy with the results, but it did take a long time to render, and the default values were way to severe.
