Thanks! I assume then that the proportion on items in the shot remain correct as well? (Meaning, they don;t get tall and skinny)

Thanks very much Bret…I really appreciate your detailed response.
With the cost of RAM being so reasonable, I figure I’ll just get 4 4GBs and be done with it. There are times I am working in Motion, with FCP open and also Boris RED open…so I’d like to do all I can to help it along.
I did notice with this first project behind me, that hopping between programs was very slow…and figured it was likely RAM related.

I realize I could have been detailed. My iMac will take as much as 16gb of RAM, and I’m thinking I’ll go that way.
I also understand (perhaps incorrectly) that FCP only uses so much RAM, and no more. I’d bet that everything will work better with more RAM, but I don;t quite understand why unless it has to do with multiple programs stunning at once, etc.

Thanks for the help. I figured I needed more RAM, when I set it up. I’ll get on that.
At least on playback, the drive is indeed rapidly flashing and I’m thinking it’s not quite to the job. To the good, I bought it at the Apple store and thanks to buying near Christmas…I have until well in January to return it.

I figured the compression could be at least part of the issue.
The settings I used were: 1920×1080, h.264, high quality, yes to frame re-ordering, multi-pass, 29.97 frames, auto data rate.
Most, if not all the stations have requested the 1920×1080, h.264, frame rate. Some have suggested a data rate of 45-50 Mbps. My thinking is that this would be 50,000kb in FCP…so I tried that too. It still left the slider in the “high” quality area…not in “best” so I assumed…and could not see that it was any better.
FWIW, my :30 finished file size is 63mb.

Perhaps a bit more about the QT files would be helpful.
When importing the native files from the camera, they do not update or render moving files, the native files are xdcam. Perhap Boris does not support this codec? (it says itmsupportsnall quicktime’)

Thanks Peter…while changing the “safe levels” on and off makes a difference…it’s still not right.
I’m really disappointed as RED has been my go to for years. Now, as I do my first HD edit, I have to use Motion which is (at least for me) not as efficient.
Perhaps there is confusion about the clips updating. I am using QT files that function correctly in QTY player and FCP.
I’m also still having issues with the QT files not updating, and it does seem to be codec dependent…so at least I could export anything needed to go to RED. But, the picture quality thing is a real problem.
Odd thing is….still graphics and text look great.
My previous version won’t work in my new machine, and my download trial doesn’t last forever…so I real y hope Boris can get this fixed…I want to buy this new version.

December 13, 2011 at 2:08 pm in reply to: Boris RED Not Updating Sources while in TimelineThanks I look forward to your response. I’d be lost without RED.
If I take the same clip….export to a different codec…like Prores…it updates correctly. The footage in question is raw file from a Sony HD camera….but if plays fine elsewhere. FWIW, I have also noticed the same issue with some automobile footage downloaded from a manufacturer’s site.

December 13, 2011 at 12:59 pm in reply to: Boris RED Not Updating Sources while in TimelineHello…I’m using it currently as the RED engine, so it’s standalone.
The footage plays fine in FCP, and QT Player….but is static in RED.
One odd things I noticed since posting was that if I make a change to the RED preferences it will swap to another frame momentarily…then go back to the previous still. All other elements in the timeline update.I’ve used RED for years and have never seen this before.

December 8, 2011 at 11:46 am in reply to: Odd problem when importing Power Point slides into FCPI had a client request to make a PowerPoint that they supplied into something that would play back on a DVD.
I could not get a clean import into my version of FCP.
I found a program called Leawo that converts Powerpoints with all their animations, etc, to movie files of stills. Works on PCs. Cost about $70 and was downloadable.
I hate to buy programs if it’s not an often used program…but this was well worth it for me.
