    HI guys….I’ve been searching all over to no avail. Shooting in a few days with a friend and his Sony Z7u. He told me today that it shoots 1440×1080, HDV.

    I’m new to the whole HD thing, and have been editing in 1920×1080 the whole time. My other shoots were with camera that used XDCAM codec. (That shoot had the budget to cover the other shooter/camera…this one doesn’t.)

    Perhaps it’s my complete lack of understanding, but I cannot understand how I can go from 1440×1080 to 1920×1080 as the aspect is different.

    I can set up my sequences in Motion, FCP or RED as 1440×1080…but how does this then output to something (in this case) the cable company or station can use without messing with the proportions of the things on screen?

    Any input would be very much appreciated.

    Edit at 1920 x 1080. FCP understands and automatically displays 1440 x 1080 footage correctly as 1920 x 1080. HDV is just saving data by using anamorphic pixel aspect.

    Just drop the clip into your XDCam sequence and it will display correctly.

    Thanks! I assume then that the proportion on items in the shot remain correct as well? (Meaning, they don;t get tall and skinny)

    HDV cameras record a 16:9 image so when FCP stretches the pixels out, the correct image is displayed – no skinnys

    Just to make your brain hurt, you could also shoot DVCProHD which is 1280×1920. On the end, I would just keep life simple and edit in a 1920×1280 ProRes 422 sequence. And since you’re shooting HDV I’m pretty sure it’s interlaced as well. So 1080i. That’s what is going to get broadcast most likely anyway.
