Do you want to display the source timecode of each clip, or the timeline timecode? If you want to do the later, just add an empty text slug to the whole timeline on the highest track and throw a timecode generator on it. Should play in real-time.

That’s great Jason, glad I could help! Just to clarify my original post, I wasn’t referring to the “repair permissions” tool in disk utility, but rather the file access permissions in the finder. If you select the scratch folder, right click and select “get info.” At the bottom of the window that pops up, there is an “ownership and permissions” section. You need to make sure that your user name is selected as the owner and you have “read and write” permissions. It is a good idea to click “apply to enclosed items” as well. In the past, I’ve found this doesn’t always fix the problem, so deleting the cache files, as you did, is often the best way to go. (and besides, it doesn’t take that long to rebuild them)

Hi Ana,
First, I’d try opening the file in quicktime and re-saving it in a different folder as a “self contained” movie. Open this new file and see if the problem is still there. If this doesn’t work, you can use the “modify>timecode” command in FCP to manually change the timecode on your file to match the visual burn in. That should ensure a proper EDL. Good luck! Do a test EDL on a short program and check it in a text editor to make sure the numbers are correct.

What was the original frame rate of the mp4 clips and how were they converted? It sounds like the problem might have been introduced in the conversion stage. Maybe you need to reconvert the media to 23.98 using a higher quality motion conversion? (eg. optical flow algorithm)

Within FCP, if you open the system settings (control-Q), check the “scratch disks” and note down where the “Waveform Cache” is set. In the finder, navigate to this folder and delete these files. They will have names like, “filename0030004kgwv.” This will force the system to redraw the waveforms when you open your project next. If this doesn’t work, check to see if the system is creating new waveform cache files in the directory. If it isn’t, it is probably a write permission issue that is preventing the program from creating new cache files. Good luck!

Sounds like a problem with you waveform cache file. It may be a file permissions issue for the directory where they are being written, or the cache files themselves could be corrupt. You can try deleting them, which will force FCP to rebuild the waveform displays.

Hi Vicky,
If I understand your post correctly, you are applying a logo graphic overlay in FCP over the whole clip? If that is the case, exporting a reference movie won’t work the way you intend, since FCP needs to render all new frames because of the logo.

sorry for the delay in replying, my account got deactivated! But I’m back now…
I tried the pigtail connector and everything is working like a charm! Then I realized it was user error all along … I made the embarrassing mistake of having forgotten to connect BOTH cables to the breakout box 🙂 Lesson learned….

Thanks for the responses. I forgot about the pigtail connector. I will root around and see if I can find it tomorrow. I tested the AJA TV app and tried both BETA component output and composite settings via the control panel with no luck. The outputs appear completely dead. The monitor doesn’t even flicker to resync when you change any of the output settings in the control panel. In fact, the CRT displayed “no sync” the entire time I did my testing, like it never got anything close to a signal. I’ll respost after testing the pigtail connection tomorrow.

Thanks Steven, I wasn’t aware of this program and it will save us a lot of time! We had to change the column heading in the ALE file to get Sebsky to find the right info, but that’s no big deal.
