    Hi Mike,
Thanks so much for the quick response – it was exactly what i needed to proceed. I now have the proper folders copied to a HD, and in reviewing the folders with Sony’s XDCAM ClipBrowser 2.6, i can see that the files are all there and containing the appropriate video information.
Now that i’m home, i’d like to convert this data and start working in my NLE, Vegas. However, ClipBrowser won’t let me convert in full HD, 24p. Am i missing something with the conversion process? I filmed with a Sony camera, and i have Sony NLE. I’m not sure what simple in-between step i’m missing before editing my video.
    Thanks again!!!

Just to add to that, i’m also not looking for benchmark speed (“fastest on the block”). I’m all about using what you’ve got until just just can’t stand it anymore, then going for the big upgrade. In this case, we are turning to a lot of web delivery of video, and i’m wasting so much render time in testing alone that my current setup has become somewhat prohibitive. I still don’t mind the overnight/24h render for an hour project. I just need something that will work with me a little more! 🙂

    Thanks John,
I’ve enjoyed reading your writeups, including your hardware section.

December 21, 2008 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Optimal workflow to archive (many) home VHS

    Hi JR,
Thanks for the input. I certainly don’t want to transfer these more than once (i have family videos from both sides of the family), so keeping an unedited original for later manipulation when technology improves makes great sense. Point well taken.

For the tangible copy – the one that we’ll be watching for the next 5 years or so – can anyone comment on the workflow? I’m demo-ing Neat Video and really like the modest yet significant supression of noise. How about interlaced –> progressive? Should i give that a go since we’re now all in the world of progressive HDTV displays? And furthermore, has anyone had luck with upconverting VHS to HD? Is that just stupid? Should i let VHS be VHS, or for our current state in technology, should i be upconverting?

I’m not sure what TBC is, but i assume it has something to do with the audio/visual sync. The sync from the ADVC is very good… i might like to put my $$$ elsewhere is possible…
    thanks!

October 24, 2006 at 3:30 pm in reply to: Capture WS content from a 4:3 camera?

Well here’s the thing: the way i’m capturing the video, it imports it as a 4:3 letterboxed image, just like you would see on a 4:3 set. However, when i drag that captured video into the Vegas timeline (WS format), i end up with an image that has both top/bottom and side/side letterboxes, just as you would see if you were watching a 4:3 program on a WS TV. In other words, the image is just a smaller rectangle in the middle of the screen. Now, i can crop it back up to occupy the entire screen, but i have a feeling that i’m loosing much of the resolution from the original Panasonic-recorded WS video, correct?
