    Hi all,
Been a Vegas and COW fan since Vegas 4. The time has come to upgrade my dedicated system. I have Vegas 7 running now on a Pentium 4 3GHz computer, 2 Gb ram, hand built. I have a $1300 budget, and am looking at Dell’s XPS 8000 with an Intel i7-860 2.8 Ghz, 8Gb ram, and Windows 7. Based purely on rendering speed, does this sound like a large step up for Vegas 9? I’m looking to do SD DV faster, and move up into HD as well. I just want to make sure that this move sounds worthwhile to those familiar with how Vegas leverages new hardware (multiple cores, but slower processing speed).
    thanks!

That sounds like a fine PC for using Vegas Pro 9.0 with HD (better than mine) and it should cut through SD effortlessly. Vegas will use as many cores as you can throw at it. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the performance of this PC with Vegas Pro.

    John,

Now it’s your time to upgrade or is it on your Christmas list?

    Ralph 🙂

No. I’m not convinced that it’s worth the upgrade for me personally. I paid the price of an early adopter. I have an Intel 2.66GHz QuadCore Extreme that I purchased when they first came out. The CPU cost me $1,000 alone. I’d like to squeeze my money’s worth out of it. To upgrade to a Core i7 I would need a new motherboard, new memory, and new CPU. That’s basically a new PC and at least a $600 investment and for what? It will be a little faster but I’m not sure I would feel the difference other than rendering.

I really feel my next step is 8 cores but the Xeon platform is just too expensive and Intel isn’t making a dual socket mobo for i7 so I’m just sitting and waiting to see what their next move is. I’m lookin’ for a big boost because I’m pretty happy with the rig I’m using now. Not the fastest on the block anymore but no slouch either. 😉

Just to add to that, i’m also not looking for benchmark speed (“fastest on the block”). I’m all about using what you’ve got until just just can’t stand it anymore, then going for the big upgrade. In this case, we are turning to a lot of web delivery of video, and i’m wasting so much render time in testing alone that my current setup has become somewhat prohibitive. I still don’t mind the overnight/24h render for an hour project. I just need something that will work with me a little more! 🙂

    Hi John,

That’s a wise decision. You know exactly what you want, waiting for the right moment, and making your move when it happens. Let us know on your site “John Rofrano-PC Equipment” when you do upgrade to keep us informed. I’m always trying to follow along with the Pros on what they use and the latest equipment.

    Thanks,
