  • Thanks Vince, I found that after I posted here. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they uploaded the latest driver. There is a bug with the jog/shuttle and USB3 that it looks like they fixed in 3.6.1 according to the wayback link. I posted to Facebook, and hopefully they will upload it. If anyone else has it, let me know.

    Thanks,

    -Matt

Its a little hard to say without seeing the footage, but I’d first try stabilizing position either with the warp stabilizer (set to no motion with position method), or possibly the old fashioned tracking stabilize system, if you have a good tracking point at the center of your disk.

January 22, 2015 at 5:21 pm in reply to: what cuda version is the right one?

As a general rule, you should not install drivers for hardware that you do not have, and you do not have a graphics card that supports CUDA. The CUDA drivers don’t do anything for you and if Davinci Resolve won’t launch without a CUDA driver installed the version you have either doesn’t support AMD cards, or there was some sloppy coding on Black Magic’s part. I would uninstall CUDA, make sure you have the latest version of Resolve, and if you are still can’t open Resolve, contact Blackmagic support.

CUDA is made by Nvidia for NVIDIA GPUs. Your mac pro has AMD GPUs, so installing CUDA can only cause problems. I would uninstall it completely.

Try checking the box “Match Legacy After Effects Quicktime Gamma Adjustments” in your project settings.

Also a heads up, M-Jpeg A is considered a deprecated codec by Apple. These days, I use photo-jpeg instead.

January 5, 2015 at 7:53 pm in reply to: Using Emoji font in After Effects

I have tried to do this as well, but was unable to. The emoji typeface is vector, and does scale. You can scale it with a word processor. It does behave a little differently from normal fonts though. I ended up taking high resolution screenshots of the emoji I needed, and animated by hand. One interesting thing, if you paste an emoji into an After Effects text layer, the emoji isn’t visible in the composition no matter what font you choose (I tried all my unicode fonts), but it is visible in the text of the layer name on the timeline.

If you have an iPad, or iPhone, you could try Custom Keypad:

I bought it to mess around with, and its pretty nifty, but I never got around to building an AE keypad for it.

December 12, 2014 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Advanced mesh warping

Have you tried using the puppet tool rather than mesh warp? I use it to fine tune projection mapping, and I find it very helpful because you can put pins exactly where you need them, and only where you need them.

December 11, 2014 at 4:57 pm in reply to: FX alternative to keying poorly lit video?

Yikes, Thats pretty tough. If the camera is locked off, you could try using Difference Matte. With white on white, and After Effect’s poor implementation of the difference Matte effect it will probably need a lot of cleanup if it works at all. It would be nice if Adobe could improve difference Matte. Things like Apple’s photo booth do a better job of it on live video.

October 27, 2014 at 7:50 pm in reply to: Green Screen/Green suit shoot

I worked on a project with puppeteers in green using puppets against a green screen. I was actually hired to help clean it up because even though it was lit about as well as could be, shadows created under the puppeteers arms etc, made a ton of artifacts. This was a long time ago, and keyers have gotten better since then, but I’d still expect a lot of roto cleanup.

Another thing to keep in mind, not only were there keying artifacts, there were many places where a puppeteer’s green stick or arm crossed in front of a puppet and erased some of the puppet. The erased portions of the puppet needed to be very carefully clone painted back in. Given what you are doing, I would recommend shooting the green man against a green screen. If the man is potentially moving in front of other actors, or moving objects in front of actors as you describe, you will want him as isolated. That should help keep any clone painting to a minimum. You could maybe compromise and set up a portable green screen on set behind the place that he will be interacting with things.
