what cuda version is the right one?
Hello Forum,
i am struggling to figure out which CUDA version (and AE Multiprocessor settings) are the best for my AfterEffects work – mostly rendering out ProRes 4K 4×4 Videos from 10K’s of CanonRAW’s.
My System:
AppleMacPro2013 (TrashCan) 8core, 2x FirePro700, 64 GB RAM, 1TB SSD
running on OSX 10.9.5I learned, the latest CUDA version slows down my machine, and Yosemite is not a speed remedy as well.
To date I installed (downgraded) to cuda 6.5.14 from the latest version offered by Mavericks (6.5.36) and it is really faster. But some versions of cuda are in-between, which version should I choose?
Still my CPU’s are not fully used by AfterEffects, some time ago I saw my CPU monitor completely busy.
Now they (12 used by AE) are just moving around on “half pressure”.I do not really understand the coherence between CUDA (GPU – but I’m firing pro 700’s) and my CPU’s but there is coherence.
How ever, any hints out there to get full performance out of my MacPro with AE CC?

CUDA is made by Nvidia for NVIDIA GPUs. Your mac pro has AMD GPUs, so installing CUDA can only cause problems. I would uninstall it completely.

As for many others I’m working with DaVinci as well on this MacPro, so as far as I know,
a life without any CUDA driver is still not possible, even with no installed NVIDIA card at all.
But the links you posted are extremely helpful and I try now rolling back to CUDA 5.5.28.Many thanks so far from cold Munich!

It doesn’t matter if you’re rolling back because your GPUs will not use CUDA. There is no reason for you to have CUDA drivers. Your GPUs will however use OpenCL so you should choose that in Resolve and Premiere.

The Problem is, DaVinci resolve won’t start without CUDA installed, no matter which GPU’s are installed.

As a general rule, you should not install drivers for hardware that you do not have, and you do not have a graphics card that supports CUDA. The CUDA drivers don’t do anything for you and if Davinci Resolve won’t launch without a CUDA driver installed the version you have either doesn’t support AMD cards, or there was some sloppy coding on Black Magic’s part. I would uninstall CUDA, make sure you have the latest version of Resolve, and if you are still can’t open Resolve, contact Blackmagic support.

Uninstalling CUDA in systems with AMD GPUs used to be necessary for our software. No longer.Since Premiere Pro CC 2014.0 (8.0) and After Effects CC 2014.0 (13.0) CUDA drivers (necessary to run Resolve) can now live alongside OpenCL drivers.
At the top of my blog post, I mention that these bugs are fixed.
Please be very clear, though. Installing CUDA drivers in a system with AMD GPUs will not accelerate ray-traced 3D compositions in After Effects. That still requires a physical NVIDIA GPU and CUDA, which is not possible with the 2013 Mac Pro.

Finally I figured out my problem!
A bad app was causing my troubles for years!The bad guy’s name is (fortunately was): “PostgreSQL” and it’s coherent library.
Anybody running this app should get rid of it as soon as possible!
It ate away months of my lifetime!
