  • What does your circle look like? If it is (or can be) a wheel with 18 spokes, you could rotate 1/18th of a revolution such that the ending location of one spoke, matches the starting location of the next. When looped, it will appear to be making a full rotation, though in reality it is only rotating a small amount.

June 7, 2011 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Iterating a pixel bender plugin?

I know there are effects that work like this. Particle effects for example work based on the previous frame (or data from the previous frame). They usually render fast from the start, but take awhile if you try to cut into the middle (presumably because they have to calculate the prior frames).

You might be right though that there is no way to do it with pixel bender or expressions. For now, I am using screen grabs from another program running a life simulation.

Still curious if anyone has an idea how to make the plug-in work in AE. I’d like to get into Pixel Bender more. It seems really powerful.

    Hmm….

Reading more about the differences between the model and object tool modes, it sounds like I should be staying in model mode. I’m not doing animation yet. I can adjust the height of the cylinder independent of the other axis, by editing it in the object properties, making it editable, or going into object mode. Unfortunately, the tutorial book doesn’t tell me to do any of those things.
I reread it carefully to see if I missed anything. It wants me to use the parametric handles to shorten the height, while in model mode on a still un editable cylinder primitive.
I don’t appear to be able to do this. The book was written for release 10, so maybe something has changed.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for the replies. I was in model tool mode.
I changed to object tool mode and now can scale along one axis.
The tutorial book I’m working through has been having me stay in model mode,
and didn’t ask me to change to object mode. Not sure why they omitted that step,
although the book was written for an older version.
I’m reading more about the two modes now.

    Thanks again,

Aha, took me a moment to find it, but its “command manager” under Window/Layout.
    That looks perfect.

    Thanks for the tip!

I agree with David, you shoudn’t expect to be able to play a file that size, but I do pre-render multi screen movies like this prior to cutting up. I usually use Photojpeg at 95% quality. This codec jpeg compresses each frame, so it works well with any frame size. As long as you don’t need to chromakey something on it, it makes a good semifinal pre-render codec. This seems to get me adequate quality while saving a lot of file size over lossless codecs.

Have you experimented with CC Bender or CC Bend It to do your distortions? You could parent the start and end points of the bend to the start and end points of your beam and lightning using expressions. I used it with the beam effect once to get a pretty good rope like movement.

What version of Mac OS are you running?
CS5 runs light years better than CS4 on every mac I have tried it on.
I used to have no end of trouble with sluggishness, crashes and dropped ram previews in CS4.
I’ve only used it on Leopard and Snow Leopard however.
If your 2007 mac is still running tiger, that could be the problem.

If you are running into memory issues when rendering a high res movie, you could try telling AE to purge every few frames during Make Movie. This helpful option is hidden in AE’s “Secrect” preferences menu. To access this, hold down the shift key while you open the preferences window. You should then see an option for the “Secret” preferences on the left. Tell it to purge every few frames or so. Be careful with the other settings in this menu as some are dangerous. This will take longer to render, because its purging from memory regularly, but can get you over a bottleneck heavy frame in a high-res comp.
