  • Sounds like a job for the Matro MXO2 Mini. Great little capture card also built for love streaming and fully functional with Skype. It will use the HDMI output from your camera to bring into the computer. If you need to use the SDI for a longer cable run, you will need the Matrox MXO2 LE.

Could give P2CMS. Not sure where it stands operating system wise but it used to do it when I was using P2 more regularly but that was a couple years ago.

June 24, 2014 at 7:45 pm in reply to: File corruption due to power spikes?

It doesn’t sound COMPLETELY farfetched but the AC power adapter are not generally the highest quality. But even so I think that would have to be some serious power spike. Like get an electrician now type of serious to be damaging equipment like a camera. Did he try repairing the files in P2CMS? Sometimes with P2 cards often record gets cut short the file isn’t closed. It will show up like there’s a problem with the file but it just needs to be processed in Panasonic software.

True that FAT32 restrictions limit file sizes to 4GB but they are ultimately seen as the same thing on the computer.

Makes perfect sense. Do you have the cameras already? Sounds like the Blackmagic Studio Camera might work well for this situation.

If only for redundancy I then would suggest something less expensive such as a Ninja Star. Unless you need the screen of the Atomos. Even then though the Ronin is a large unit meant more for studios. I would sooner look at the Ninja or Samurai Blade for camera mounting.

June 18, 2014 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Io XT under Windows?

    Hi Michael,

The Io XT does work on windows but yes, most AJA marketing is geared towards Mac. That is because many of their devices are centered around ProRes and Mac users. Don’t forgot that AJA really got big as hardware for use with Final Cut Pro (legacy).

Unfortunately though there is no way to connect an Io XT to a computer without Thunderbolt connection. The Apple adapter that you speak of is not simply a cable adapter and it requires the thunderbolt controller inside the computer to interpret the ethernet signal. An interesting thought for sure, though I would suggest that you look towards other options.

What is the computer that you are trying to run? A PC laptop or desktop? If it is a desktop you can always get a Kona desktop card and when you upgrade to a machine with thunderbolt you can put in a thunderbolt PCIe chassis such as those available from Sonnet, Magma, or OWC. This will give you the flexibility to connect it to a laptop later and it will really be no different than an Io XT which is really a Kona3G card in an external thunderbolt chassis combined with pieces of the Kona breakout box.

  • Quite honestly then, I would take a hard look at the Panasonic GH4K. Adapt the lenses that you need to it (unless you are already invested in Canon EF glass in which case it might be more of a challenge.)

I use micro 4/3 gear a lot and I am very happy with it. The glass is good and prices are right. The GH4K is a flexible system when you consider the expansion module. On it’s own too you will have high quality, memory efficient, internal 4K video in a lightweight, relatively inexpensive, package.

The same screen as in the Cineroid is in the Alphatron. I bit more money but generally regarded higher for build quality etc.

My issue with most of the EVF’s is the same though; they’re huge. The Zacuto EVF is the only one that I find to be the proper size. It will be interesting to see the Gratical when it is actually released. I have a feeling that it will be the best on the market.
