That lens specifically is a f3.5-f5.6. I.E., as you zoon from 18mm to 55mm the aperture closes from an f3.5 at the wide end, to a f5.6 at the long end. This is roughly a stop and a half of light loss.
While it is happening on your Nikon as well, you notice is more on your AF100 because sensors are more sensitive to varying stops than your eye is. As in, your eye has such great dynamic range that a stop and a half of light loss doesn’t really matter to it, but to a sensor with roughly 11 stops of dynamic range (being generous), a stop and a half is a BIG difference. That’s why you see it in the EVF and on the LCD of your AF100, but not through the optical pentaprism of your Nikon.

Peter, neither Ikan nor Wooden Camera make any matteboxes. Both of those cameras make support gear and rigs but no mattebox.
Look instead at Genus as a more budget friendly alternative to Chrosziel and Arri. The Redrock Micro has treated me well but is far to heavy for my tastes now. The Oconnor O-Box is what I really want now but again, it’s money at $1,000.

April 12, 2013 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Avid Won’t Transcode Atomos Samurai FootageUnfortunately I came to the project late and it’s actually already been onlined using SxS media that was shot simultaneously but I’m trying to back track to see what the problem could have been so that I can hopefully prevent it from happening again. The importing instead of AMA is an interesting suggestion. I will see if we can go back to the Samurai masters and run a test. The shots are very short for the most part so I don’t think length of them would be the problem.
Thanks!

Prices vary but they do have several that are specifically denoted as “Master.” Unfortunately I can’t really speak to personal experience with these tape stocks but TapeOnline is great.

This could have been anything. You certainly did not use it too many times. A card should be able to reformat far more than 4 times. I say just replace the card. For all you know, it might be camera, but replacing the card will eliminate one variable and could solve the problem. If it happens again on a new card, you have a larger issue and should contact Panasonic. But honestly, that card is $36.56 at B&H. Don’t wait until it’s a 10 frame skip or a drop out completely. That type of mistake will cost far more than a card replacement.
In the meantime, you may want to contact Lexar and try to get them to replace your current card. It is probably still under some sort of a warranty.
Also bare in mind that SD cards are not built for professional acquisition. As hard a pill as they may be to swallow, P2, SxS, REDMAGs, are all built and tested for thousands of formats, thousands of plug ins and outs, and years of use. SD cards are built to be replaceable. In the end, you get what you pay for, always.

April 10, 2013 at 12:18 pm in reply to: So what is the Blackmagic Cine Camera Really Like?Charles,
When are you planning on shooting this project? Keep in mind that you won’t have access to a 4K camera until at least the end of July and that current BMCC’s are backordered endlessly. It sounds to me though that you may be doing this project sooner in which case you will probably have to rent and that means that your only option will be the currently “available” model. If time is not an issue on it though, then that is another story that reopens the debate.

April 8, 2013 at 10:00 pm in reply to: Join me this Saturday at NAB 2013 for my BMCC presentationMarco, I’ve been trying to decipher the parts and pieces of your rig and while I’ve got a few of the more noticeable pieces, MixPre, matte box, viewfactor cage, I was wondering if you would be able to elaborate on some of the other pieces of your rig. Specifically the little pieces that make it all work, like what you use to mount your MixPre to the rails, your cables, battery distribution, etc.

April 7, 2013 at 4:09 pm in reply to: AF100a Lumix G X Vario lenses and 10 bit SDI out. Also keep in mind the F3 internal recording is 35mbit 4:2:0. The need for an external recorder is not lost even with an F3. I was on a shoot two weeks ago with an F3 recording to Samurai for this very reason. So even a used F3 is not ready to shoot at the codec quality that you are looking for without a similar type of investment that you would otherwise be doing for the AF100a.
Still though, I agree with Erik. The AF100 is an excellent camera that is an extremely capable performer with the right light, the right recorder and of course, the right glass.
