Hi Jeremy,
I was wondering if you have had any time to compare transfer speeds 1394b vs USB?

Hi Helmut,
That may be the case of Panasonic’s FW Bus in the PCD series card readers, but I have never experienced file corruption on the FW 800 bus in our MAC’s with HDD’s, CF card readers, or RED Mag’s, to level that occurs with the PCD 20 and multiple card reads.
Are you using your PCD 35 in the field with a laptop, and if so, may I ask what interface you are using with the PCIe bus to the laptop?

The target volume will be formatted FAT 32. If your client is cutting with a MAC this could be a problem for them. There are some software solutions for this that allow a MAC to read/write a FAT 32 and/or NTFS volumes.
For some jobs I have used the camera in DV100 mode, attached a MBP laptop via FW400, and used FCP log and capture DV100 “non controlled” to capture direct to HDD. The problem with this method is each captured clip starts 00:00:00 time code, and has no TC relevance to the P2 cards.
The best method would be to rent/buy/beg/borrow/steal a card reader, and transfer each card as it finishes writing in the camera. This means at the end of the job you are only waiting a relatively short period of time for the final transfer to occur.
Lately I have been transferring cards via a PCD 20 connected to an MBP laptop by USB, I have a RAID 0 (mirror) HDD connected via FW 800, and use Shotput to transfer the files with verification. Each 32Gb takes around 18 mins to transfer this way.
My MBP laptop has a large Capacity HDD so I use it as a secondary target for Shotput as a short term BUP for the client whilst they are traveling with their drive.
On larger data jobs I will have a second MBP hooked up via Ethernet to provide more connectivity to other drives/devices.
This solution of course works best in controlled locations such as in doors/studio, though I have used it in the back of a car with a sine wave 12v inverter with protection. -
P2CMS is generally a bit slower through the same paths.
Are you able to test and confirm if your PCD 20 is the same? Is the USB faster into your Mac than 1394b? -
Not against using USB, just find it curious that it is faster than 1394b, and by a fair bit.
The only downside to using USB with the PCD 20 is that the P2 formatter software won’t work, it does not recognise the USB bus. 1394b works fine with this. -
Hi Jeremy,
The tests have been done with 3 different MBP laptops, two running 10.5.8, and the other 10.6.3. The software in each is compliant with the OSX versions.
The firmware in both PCD 20’s is up to date.
The cards were a mixture of E and A series cards, in some tests all A series, and in other tests all E series.
Different cables were used to remove any question about connection issues.
The target drive in each test was the MBP’s own internal drive, in some earlier tests I used a 1394 target drive for the older MBP’s with 400/800 connections, resulting in an expected slow down in transfer speeds.
The consistent thing with all the tests was the surprise that the PCD 20’s USB connection was faster than the 1394b connection.
Drag and drop tests were marginally faster then those done with Shotput set to verify file size only.
Shotput set to verify file contents was much slower, generally around 30% slower. -
Not looking for too small. Needs to be portable though. I’m concerned that 5.6″ is too small. It’s not much bigger than the fold out screen.
Is the larger Small HD 8.9″ screen available anywhere anymore? Is it any good?
The Panasonic
BT-LH910GJ looks good, especially the 3D assist functions (I have a 3D-A1 too and location 12v monitoring would be nice for that rather than dragging the mains powered screen around all the time.) But it is a little bit more than I care to spend at this time. -
We have the Olympus Zuiko 14-35 f2 with 4/3 adapter.
This lens is excellent, provides very nice bokeh.
I’m waiting for the 2x extender to arrive, but using it in conjunction with the on board ND wheel, a fader ND, I’m able to shoot at F2 in almost all locations.
This lens may push your budget, but it is worth the money, and with the 2x extender it will get into that nice portrait range.
The extender may be a problem for run and gun, in that you will have to remove it to go wide. -
Hi Patrick,
Nice work.
Can the viewfinder rods retract back fully with the plate in place?

Let’s not get bits and bytes mixed up.
13MBps is roughly 100mbps, so what’s bad about that again?
