Yes – exported and re-encoded using ProRes…that’s what I get for posting at 3AM…appreciate you asking for clarification.

    Hi Mark –

I’ve worked with at least 10 streams of video before with my drives, using HDV footage captured from my Z5, so I’m not believing that’s the issue, but they’re 7200 RPM drives connected via FW800. I’m currently working with 3 streams…I believe it’s the way my iMac is dealing with the NX5’s codecs…even though the video has been exported as FCP Quicktimes…as I thought that would alleviate the problem, which it hasn’t. Appreciate the response…what else can I tell you?

Indeed…checked that also, all the tapes were recorded at 48khz, the capture preset is set to the same. Good thought. Anyone else?

    Hi Chris –

Both the drive speed (7200 RPM) and the connection speed (USB2) aren’t the problem…I use the same USB drives consistently with no problems while working with HDV…it’s an issue with FCP related to the older DV tapes I’m now capturing. And again, even capturing to the internal system drive makes no difference either…but thanks, any other ideas?

Shane – I appreciate that. Any suggestion on which settings to use in L&T? I wish to get the most out of the video and audio – I just checked the settings and did have it set to Matrix Audio? That’s now stereo. Even with my camcorder I have the same lengthy issue when importing footage – I can’t imagine why/how anyone would want to employ AVCHD with FCP.

I have two Z5U’s that I love, and frankly with this kind of long-form shooting, I can’t see any way that I’d want to go tapeless anytime soon with that kind of issue, it would kill me.

  • Hi Jonathan –

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I actually have finally been able to get to print to the deck in a letterboxed 16:9…in DV, but that’s not what I need. I need to be able to go to the deck in full 16:9 HDV. For some projects I’d even deal with DV SD as long as it’s full 16:9 but it’s really 16:9 HDV that I’m after. Any ideas?

If it’s not a real-time playback…what is it exactly? Sorry – after 15 years in video I find myself a newbie in this one area! And – if you’re amenable, I’d love to get an idea of how to do it, since I cannot. Again, completely connected, FCP recognizes the deck and I can capture just fine…just printing is the problem. Much obliged.

    Hi Ben –

Yes, it’s set up…in fact I can capture just fine…it’s the printing to tape that doesn’t work. I’m getting some varying reports that I cannot print to tape in HDV…does that jibe with your experience? It makes no sense that I would be able to source HDV but not record back to tape in the same fashion…does it?

  • Much obliged! In addition – can you either confirm or not that I can output to the deck in HDV? I mean – if I’m sourcing in HDV what’s the point of only being able to print in DV, right?

    Thank you again!

That would explain a lot. So I’ll ask your advice then on archiving HDV footage – other than going to blu-ray. What are my options?
