  • Cannot print to video/edit to tape FCP

I am appealing to ANYONE who can help me with this problem. I am running FCP 7 and am using a Sony M15AU deck directly connected via firewire. I have no problem at all connecting to the deck and capturing anything I need to, but I cannot print back to tape. I’ve had this same issue with FCP 5 & 6, and now the latest version.

As I’m typing this I’m connected to the deck, and am capturing perfectly…so I know it’s connected and recognizes the deck. However I have tried a number of setting changes which have been offered to ensure this would work. Here’s what I know thus far.

    1. I’ve been told to set “external video” to ‘all frames’. It will not stay set to ‘all frames’ and keeps defaulting back to off. I’m guessing this has something to do with it…maybe you know perhaps why this would happen? I’ve tried refreshing the device to ensure it’s connected, which it is by virtue of being able to capture. It also appears under ‘firewire’ in the hardware list when I opened it.

    2. Under view > video playback it only gives me the options of NONE or Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main. It has about 9 HDV options which are all grayed out.

I’m assuming I can print to tape in HDV, as I’m sourcing in 16:9 HDV. I don’t have much use for DV at this point. I could really use some help. I think I can safely assume it’s not a connection issue, as I can capture…I’m hoping there’s a setting I haven’t discovered yet which isn’t set correctly. Much obliged for any help you can offer.

Quick one – is the deck control setup in the log and capture window? This is needed for print to tape, and can only be set from there or the audio/video settings boxes. Without it, you get no edit to tape…

    Hi Ben –

Yes, it’s set up…in fact I can capture just fine…it’s the printing to tape that doesn’t work. I’m getting some varying reports that I cannot print to tape in HDV…does that jibe with your experience? It makes no sense that I would be able to source HDV but not record back to tape in the same fashion…does it?

No – but most HDV problems (I don’t use it much these days) are related to a mis-match on the input/output of the deck and Mac, where one is set to DV, not HDV.

Also, a lot of people report issues with powering up the deck and Mac and connecting it in a certain order – so try a few variations.

Hopefully someone else can offer more specific advice.
