Cool, thanks everyone for your advise.
I am much more familiar with Motion so it will take me a while to work out how to do some of these things. However it looks like there are some possibilities.
    Thanks again

I do this all the time. Just send out of Final Cut Pro to compressor, drag the DVD setting onto it and the results are normally quite good.

I use USB 2 external hard drives without any problem for capturing so I’m not sure if it is that.

I use the same camera and setup almost and often I find I need to refresh the devices – View – External Video – Refresh A/V devises. then I reselect the camera I video playback. That seems to fix it for me.

I should probably note that the other issue I have with my current setup is the delay from FCP to the plasma (a couple of frames caused I presume by going through the DV Converter)… not sure if there is a way around that?

    Hi Shane

    Thanks for your help.

So I can use a graphics card (e.g. ATI Radeon 3870) with color and still preview out to my plasma? The problem I have now is that the plasma is fed by the Datavideo DV converter (via firewire) and you cannot preview out from Colour using firewire.

Also, is there any benefits in capturing using something like the Matrox (all footage shot will have been done in a Sony HVR-Z1 – up to this point I have just captured using Firewire)?

    Thanks heaps,

    Matt

  • You may be in quickmask mode. At the bottom of your tools palette there is a circle in a square. Just make sure this is off. The shortcut key is ‘Q’ so if you accidently hit this you will be in quickmask mode.

    Hi,

    Thanks everyone for the posts.

Some of these are quite strange issues and I am really starting to think it may be my graphics card. I spent half the year using 10.4 and the same problems existed back then too (even after a erase and install of both operating systems). Also, all the problems happened immediately after installing (i.e. so there was no time when Motion worked and then it stopped… likewise with deleting preferences, etc).

I must admit that with adjusting text, when I changed it in the inspector today and it worked totally fine. It seems that if I only adjust using the inspector I have full control. However as soon as I use the HUD without selecting any text, when I go back to the inspector I have no control over text.

However in despite of this, Apple Motion is very quick to use but I do think I will need to learn AE as I do so much compositing work.

    Thanks again,

    Matt

In the HUD you can only expand the feather to 100 or 200 from memory. Also in the inspector you can only move the slider that far as well. However you can type in a larger number into the inspector (such as 400 or larger). This is how I get softer edges.
