One thing I have found out is that there is all sorts of video work out there, and most of it is stuff you would never think. For example, I’ve done a lot of promotional work for pharamceutical companies. Not TV spots, but internal training, sales materials, tradeshow exhibits. I never knew this stuff existed until I got into it.
I think there are “hundreds of video companies out there” because there’a a lot of work out there. Any with the transformation of the internet/merging with the tv/etc, it’s only going to grow.
You prospects for a career depend on your market of course. Maybe a good thing for you to do is look around your area (if you plan on staying there) and seeing if there is anybody doing what you’d like to do. If there is, go talk to them. Go through the yellow pages and call each company and ask for an informational interview. Ask them how they got there, how they got started, what they think of the business. Try and find a model to base your plans on. Who knows, maybe you could even land a job that way.
But ultimately, don’t let that depressing article bum you out. If you’ve got a passion for the work and are willing to work hard and be practical, you’ll get what you want.

I think the main thing is to figure out how much you want to make off this. How much money do you need to make to justify the time you spend? Don’t undercharge just to get the work. You’ll just end up resenting the job and your client.

Hard to say what to add without exactly knowing what aspect of work you do, but here’s a few other possibilities:
– What are the deliverables? One BETA master and 1 DVD for example. Any extra dubs will be additional.
– Do you hand off the work files? Do they expect the video master or a hard disk with all the projects?
– If you shot it, who gets the footage at the end of the job? Do you retain the tapes or do they go to the client?
– Who is responsible for purchasing stock material (audio, video, etc.)
– What is the process of revision? How many rounds does the client get before they have to pay more?all i can think of for now…

Thanks! Exactly what I needed. I had accomplished this before using a much more complicated precomping/time strecthing method, and this is so much cleaner.
Now to push my luck…
Is there a way to add on to this expression to give the child layer some bounciness? So when it stops it wobbles a bit instead of coming to total stop?many thanks,

You can also try the “write on” effect. Use an expression to link the position of your layer to the x/y coordinates in write on.
