[Christer Gomes] “So you’re saying that I can transcode all my rectangle pixel to squre by using the Apple ProRess (HQ)?”
Yes, you could do that, whether its worth it or not, is up to you. Depends on what your edit machine is and whether it can handle the playback of different media types in a DVCPROHD timeline. I’d do a test in a simple timeline first, you might be able to get away with just editing everything in a DVCPROHD timeline, then do a final render before you output. Or if your show is really edit intensive or grphics heavy and you have the space, yes you can transcode to PRORES. Depending on how much footage you have, that might take a while.
[Christer Gomes] “I guess that will involve a real time trascoding via the AJA i/o.”
Don’t know, I have a Kona card, and an 8core MacPro, so I would be converting via Compressor. I don’t know how the IO works, so you’d have to research that yourself. Again, do a small test on a small file, and see how long it takes to transcode vs render.
I design all my graphics in square pixels. it tends to fall apart less when I down-convert to SD or web videos, it seems.
Good Luck, and there is a lot to be learned by taking some time and troubleshooting with small test files.

I’ve been caught with this before as well. Choose the codec that you are most used to. I like the DVCPROHD, its a great looking codec, but I HATE non-square pixels. So, no that I have lots more server room to play with, we are shooting everything AVC-INTRA 100 and converting to ProRes HQ. Hello Square Pixels!!!!
And now, designing graphics is a lot less of a hassle.

Ok folks! Here is the final piece. Off to the approval people now, not too bad for a rookie that doesn’t have any formal (or informal) training in 3D or C4D. I must say though, it was a heckuva lot easier to figure than Maya. Spent many hours trying to get Maya to work, but gave up.
So, thanks to all on the forum for the help, I think I’ll be looking for a class to get some training on C4D so I can do this stuff easier and make it look nicer.
Any constructive criticism is welcome!

Whatever the factory default is. (camera is in use at the moment, so I don’t know exactly) But I don’t see my batt in the list when I went to change it. But When the camera starts beeping, the indicator on the batt still says half full. If I let it go until the camera dies (did a test, not during a shoot!!) I get another 30-35 minuets operating time.
Just not sure what the equivalent battery is in the menu options.

Okay, here is what I have after a couple hours work. The write on I did in After Effects just because I already knew how to do it there. The suggestion of using a flat sweepnurbs object to do this, but I didn’t have the time to explore. This is the rough, there will be more camera moves, and tweaked movement. Its also about 2x speed it should be.
Thanks for all the help!

[Shane Ross] “But Avid’s media management is WORLD CLASS. “
Yep, that’s one thing I miss about avids. They had stellar media mngmt tools. Still do. Apple has this whole “Lets throw it on the HD, and hope the software remembers where it is” mentality. That’s why I don’t use iPhoto, or Aperture either. Granted, there are workarounds, but its not the way the theory of how the software is supposed to work. Apple says “manage it from within the app” but then doesn’t give you very good tools to do so.
Its all right, looks like I’m doing it the best way for me right now, i appreciate everyone’s insight and thoughts.

[Jeremy Garchow] “I tend to be pretty organized and keep things in nice folders in the Finder”
[Jeremy Garchow] “it’d be cool if I could just send it to the folder in the Finder (which I would do anyway) and then have FCP update with those new files or even new folders within folders. That way i organize once in the Finder and it’s then duplicated in FCP.”
Are you my long lost brother? This is exactly what I’m looking at!!! I want to organize once. If I was king for a day, I would have all my files that I needed before I started the edit *snicker*, organize the files int he finder, then drag the whole mess into FCP and have it show up the same.
I’ve put in this request to apple through the proper channels, but don’t hold ou much hope from their end. Looks like the Digital Haven people are ALMOST there with Loader, or Gridiron with FLOW, but its not quite there yet.
Meanwhile… *drag…drop….drag…drop…*

[Shane Ross] “so the new files you have should be in a separate folder, say on the desktop, then use LOADER to move them to the new final location and import them into FCP”
I guess I avoid this by being organized and saving my files in the proper file structure in my projects folder before I even import them. Why save the files to your desktop then move them either yourself or with loader? I guess if you are getting the files from a main server or a graphics artist, but I do all my own graphics so I just save them where I want in the first place.
[Shane Ross] “as long as you put them in the folder you want them to reside in first.”
Why did you stop doing it this way and put the files where you want them yourself? Unless, again, you are getting files form many other sources.
[Shane Ross] “as editors tend to be sloppy on the organizational end. “
Not this editor. I’m borderline psychotic when it comes to organization. Which might be part of my problem in the first place 😉
[Shane Ross] “You can then get rid of the original on the desktop, or put it somewhere else.”
Yet another step I dont’ have to do since I put the files where I want on my raid first.
[Shane Ross] “have two copies, in case the media drive dies. Always good to have a backup. “
Amen to that, but I really hope my $20k terrablock doesn’t fail so badly that I can’t recover the files…
[Shane Ross] “And yes, it will make a new bin…and then you move them.”
Why do that when I can drag them directly from the finder into the bin I want them in in the first place? (Was that too snarkey? snarkey – 1 definition – cranky, bitchy, quarrelsome, tired and short tempered) No, wasn’t snarky at all…
[Shane Ross] “but is this REALLY that hard? “
Noooo, just another step I’d like to eliminate. I think I was an efficiency expert in a former life…
[Shane Ross] “This is a HUGE part of editing, importing and organizing your footage. If you don’t want to do this, hire an assistant editor. But really, this is just what you do. “
Yes, yes, and yes. Its not that I dont’ want to do it, just looking for faster/better ways of doing it. Especially when there are a lot of files to import. Might be that I’m just lazy.
[Shane Ross] “If that existed, then producers would have no need for you. SO yeah, that is asking TOO much. JOB SECURITY! Hee. “
I’m all about job security. Just because you make your work easier, doesn’t’ mean you have to charge less for it!
Cheers!

Same here, I’ve got 14 drives sitting on my shelf. Other editors have 20 plus of archived shows. Lookign at tape.
For acaddy systems, we use weibetech enclosures. No cages, trays or anything. FW800 or eSata. Been pretty solid for us.
Can get multi bay units as well.

I don’t think that the chip will have anything to do with it. Apple wouldn’t release a chip that isn’t working with its flagship software package, and as for 3rd party stuff, while the architecture of the chip might change, its functionality usually isn’t an issue. You need to be more careful of software updates. Apple has been know to flub it once in a while with OS updates.
Faster is better, right? I just got an 8 core (previous gen, not the latest) and its crazy fast. That being said, I was moving up from a dual core 2.5 PPC machine. Its insanely fast at compression MPEG2 and H264’s, which I am doing more and more of. Just make sure you enable all the cores thorugh the qMaster preferences to take advantage of all the cores while using compressor.
Get the new one.
