If you genlock your ATEM switcher and video cameras (this assumes the cameras are genlockable, doesn’t it?) how do you “time” the ATEM switcher and video cameras? Are there any controls associated with the ATEM switcher that allows you to advance or delay the sync and subcarrier to match timing of the video cameras?

I have a lightly-used Blackmagic Design Decklink SP card that will input composite video . . . call me at 919-790-5488 or visit my website at https://www.digiteksys.com for my email address.

Any delay caused by the ATEM 1 M/E is the result of the following: using non-synchronized video sources to the 1 M/E and letting the switcher sync everything up . . . which adds one frame of delay. Genlock your video cameras and the 1 M/E to a master sync source and you won’t have this one frame of delay.

According to Blackmagic if you use the DVE effects you add one frame of delay. Don’t use a DVE effect and you won’t add this frame of delay.

If you are using a converter to change component analog video, etc. into SDI or HDMI to feed the 1 M/E you will add another frame of delay.

If you have additional delay I would put it down to other equipment such as a projector or routing switcher, etc.

A few things to remember . . . the ATEM 1 M/E works either as an HD or SD switcher . . . you can’t mix and match inputs . . . you set the resolution (480i, 720P, 1080i, etc)and your sources must be at that resolution . . . the exception being computer feeds coming in via HDMI . . . you can bring in a computer at a different resolution and frame rate then your video cameras and the 1 M/E will work with it as a video source.

If you plan to work in HD, then you will need a converter to upconvert the output of your DVD to something that the 1 M/E will like (SDI or HDMI).

Knowing those restrictions, the 1 M/E is an excellent switcher, and certainly affordable at $2,495.00 (or less) . . . You can run the 1 M/E using a Mac or Windows PC via the included Software Control Panel or spend the money and buy the 1 M/E Control Panel.
