ok, so after many painful hours, no more fingernails and less hair, the situation appears (fingers crossed) to be resolved happily… Turns out to be a driver problem, which looking above is where you were heading me. I’ve installed 67.22 at advise from Avid support forum wise one, and low ‘n behold, we appear to have a working system with my 6600gt card.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Been a steep learning curve, and a good exercise in logic and narrowing down the angles, but like to learn new stuff, so thats ok.

Well it would appear to be an incompatibilty between Avid and the gigabyte 6600gt card. All working fine now with the FX5200… don’t pretend to really understand, but as far as i can tell some problem happens when Avid gets as far as ‘initializing audio’ of what ever comes after that… i’ll see if i can get in touch with card manufacturers and nVidia to see what they think… cheers for your suggestions.

Think im making headway… after 12 hours trying to figure it all out yeasterday, switched back my 5200 card this am, and low and behold, Avid works. So, reinstalled my 6600gt card, but not driver… it works. Then installed driver and it didn’t, shuts down as ‘initializing audio’… so, gonna try latest drivers from nVidia site and see what happens… Might be Gigabyte utilities n drivers

OK… removed all hotfixes since Jan… edited in Feb adn viewed in March, all was ok then. Still same problem. Loading screen comes up,see files being loaded… gets as far as ‘audio’, then back to desktop, no message, nothing… any other thts? Most annoyingly, I did one system restore back a month or so and Avid worked, briefly… after restore XP loaded in 800×600 res, i loaded up AVID and it worked fine, ok i tht, nornality restored. Then i tried moving back to 1280×1024, the res id been working in fine b4 on FX5200… didn’t like that. Back to original problem. Wasn’t able to restor back anymore after that… System restore failure at every attempt.
