It would appear Apple doesn’t develop professional video applications any more. They develop prosumer video editing apps and are seeing if 3rd party developers will make it into a professional product for them. Nice trick, if you can pull it off. Remains to be seen, but it’s off to a rocky start. Problem is, they really haven’t told anyone what they’re doing. When enough time has passed, and enough people have spoken (with their wallets) they will tell us what the “Pro” in FCX means. Until then, it doesn’t belong there.

Craig, I did notice the point you made regarding the interface, but still I wonder what the ultimate benefit for the video industry will be from it. Just as Word gave widespread availability of word processors to the masses, and simplified templates eliminated many design and printing jobs, I think this MAY have the same effect. Still, iMovie has existed for how many years now? And while it certainly brought the availability of many of these “new” concepts to the masses, I seriously wonder if the “extra” features are going to create a massive stampede of users?
Conceptually, FCX and iMovie are pretty close as far as I can see. Sure, users like yourself, who have the background and time to sort through it will point out many fantastic advances, but… are they really enough to empower the masses to produce that much more content? I ask sincerely.
Perhaps FCX greatest advancement is the opportunity to scale it out? Not knowing enough about iMovie architecture, I would have to wonder why we haven’t seen a rush of 3rd party developers for “extra” features in that application. As they are both targeted to consumers (at the very LEAST the initial FCX release is), then what differences make FCX viable for an explosion of video from consumers, as opposed to say, iMovie?

Interesting observation. Perhaps the goal of this release was to regain absolute control of their product? It is certainly part of the love/hate relationship that we’ve always had with this company. On one hand, sand-boxed systems are inherently more secure and somewhat more robust, on the other, they are typically limited.
I’m beginning to believe that they are trying to combine the best of open source development (core program with 3rd party development) with greater product control for a profit motive (all 3rd party apps sold via app store).
We’ll just have to wait and see what the long term benefits to the industry might be. Would have to agree this is a very ham-fisted way to attempt such an endeavor. Part of what was destroyed in the process is the trust of the very people most needed for success, pro’s and developers. It’s a huge gamble to rely on the broader consumer market to rebuild this trust via conscripted usage en masse.

I’m noticing this as well. As FCX seems more conducive to bringing a wider base of potential users to the market, what does that mean for someone at a management level?
How much time is it worth investing for a complete novice? How beneficial can they be for some of the mundane chores? How would this transition to other systems for finishing? Correcting?
We are presently trying to determine how this product might be used to distribute mundane task/projects to a wider user base. Starting to see some potential, which gets us real specific on what feature sets will have to be available before it is a viable resource.
In the end, just how much usable work can we get from someone who might know nothing about editing?

It appears to me this is FCX is simply a way for Apple to further slash R&D cost for an expensive division (Pro). Why flesh out a program when you can have 3rd party developers do it for you and make money every time said developers sell a “feature” via your app store. Optimize it to play on all the devices you sell (iPads) and you will continue to rake in the jack.
Success or failure is PURELY gauged by the bottom line. FCX is the highest grossing app on the store. Why would they really need to care about what the professionals need? They will continue providing a core product and let the world sort out what it will be. In essence, they’re trying to be the monetary gatekeeper for a quasi open source program. Given the level of sophistication that many open source applications have risen too, it’s not a hard argument to make in a boardroom. Of course, I can’t really think of any open source type software that is routinely used in the professional world, except for some minor system utilities. Perhaps this will be the first.
Open source programs usually develop a strong community of adamant supporters, so I suppose they’ve got a good start with Chris and Craig.
