I know and have utilized all the tricks around to do text extrusion in AE but all are pretty cumbersome when dealing with lots of texts, hence my frustration …

Actually way back when Boris had a simple text extrusion tool in the Continuum plug-in set which was very handy when dealing with many text layers that sit-in clients want to re-write in an instant. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in OSX or I’d be still using it.

You might be able to make something along those lines with Conoa 3D layer but as Dave LaRonde says, a full 3D app is a better tool for this. I’ve never tried it myself but there’s a demo version available.

I strongly strongly advise that the knife used in the close-up will have a rubber blade painted metallic. Even if you dull the edge it’s still a very thin steel blade which can pretty easily injure your actor badly if handled without utmost care. Especially if, as I suspect, none of the two involved has any stunt training and/or you don’t have a stunt supervisor around. Since a blade is nearly two-dimensional in picture (unless shot in extreme close-up) you can always replace it with the aid of tracking in post-production if you don’t think it looks realistic enough then. In all set-ups like this safety first is paramount, not perfect realism – trust me here: SAFETY FIRST!

Quick question: why a tiff image sequence? Instead of a Animation QuickTime file which is basically a tiff sequence in a QT wrapper.

I don’t need no fancy texture mapping, reflections or shiny bevels – just a ‘Extrude Text’ radio button, a Z dimension slider and front and side colour settings in the text layer paired either with a simple built-in side shadow and/or affected by layer lights. Just to give texts a bit of dimension. How hard can it be? Seriously.

The axis break-up of position keyframes is a very welcome function. Gonna remove my current crazy null layer set-ups.

  • I regularly convert DVD source VOBs to a editable codec with MPEG Streamclip which has a very good deinterlacer and rescaler. Here’s the web page where you can download it:

and it’s free as in beer or speech.

One thing to consider is how much of the raw material is going to be used. Do you really need all of it? A quicker approach might be to take a rough edit and export that to a format the FCP can handle. Or take the final edit and ‘pull out’ some seconds at head and tail of each cut and export that. That way you will not have to re-sift through a lot of stuff the original editor has already rejected. And you will be sure to have takes that the director/production has approved.

Weight resistance training at the gym – 3 times a week. Having some strength in arms and upper body really helps. I do notice when I skip my training for some time that tension pains increase when working at the computer. Also I have stuff I need frequently not within reach from my chair so I have to get up regularly to get them. A practical solution to force breaks from the computer during the workday. Good for the back too.

Then just as Walter Biscardi I use a Wacom. It’s positioned in front of the keyboard and I have the front end of the keyboard on the Wacom so keyboard leans back slightly which together with keeping the chair pretty low put my hands in a straighter position. The mouse I mostly use when playing FPS games 🙂

I’ve seen that Logitech has just put out a superlow keyboard that looks like a good way too to keep wrists not so bent while typing. (don’t know if it’s OSX compatible)

Have you really run 10.5.3? Not 10.5.2? Just asking as it was released yesterday and all that’s been available of this version before are developer betas.
