Just to make sure, the Ultrastudio is not transcoding but capturing a live feed from the HD-SDI.
You can playback pre-recorded footage from the camera and capture the output but the debayer is not very good in playback mode and exhibits aliasing. When capturing a live feed (not in playback mode) my tests show a very nice debayer. VERY close to full debayer quality.

note: I’m using the latest MacBook Pro Retina maxed out and the newest Desktop Video Driver 9.6.1 released today.
I rendered a 2sec test clip in PR4444, PR 422HQ and BM10BIT and imported all footage in Premiere. Only the 4444 was clip had blue flashes. I only work with 4444 (all finishing footage) so it’s very annoying.
There is still lag between the premiere monitor and the HDMI output on the Ultrastudio 3D. They are not in sync.
Custom size sequences are also still a no-go.
Basically I can’t use the Ultrastudio 3D at all and I’m forced to monitor through thunderbolt HDMI adaptor as a second monitor.

It should works just fine. I found that the capture via Ultrastudio 3D is higher quality than converting R3Ds using REDCINEX.

Also a VERY cool new feature in the beta 3.3.3 is the “Look around” feature. When enabled we get the full FOV of the sensor with a crop factor of 1.3 instead of 1.6 so a 50mm is around 65mm instead of 85mm. When recording using external recorder like the ultra studio or other devices it gives us more flexibility at 1080p.

When I come back home I will plug everything and document the situation for you. All I can say is that via SDI it always worked.. I’m currently on the beta firmware V3.3.3 which enables “look around” and it’s amazing because when you capture with LA on you drop the crop factor to 1.3. A 50mm becomes around 65mm instead of 85mm

1080p 23.976 setting via SDI works like a charm. Using driver 9.6.

Go with AJA. ULtrastudio is BUGGY with Premiere and FCPx even with latest drivers. Depends on your need but you should try before with your workflow. It works like sh$t on mine. Selling mine and looking for something else. And forgot to mention that it is BURNING hot. I could fry eggs with it.

I meant that R3D at 1/4 was horrible in OpenCL CS6 with my computer configuration so I transcoded the footage to Prores 444 to see if Premiere was going to work better and it did not. It was still a horrible editing experience.
That’s why I gave FCPX a try and with the stellar performances I get I now understand that Premiere CS6 needs some serious optimization work with OpenCl.

May 13, 2012 at 5:11 pm in reply to: OpenCL acceleration on Macbook Pro with Certified card is BADTrying to edit a project right now at 1080p.. (coming off R3D at 4K 1/4 not usable and even my current 1080p project) and it is still very painful. Drop frames, crashes etc.
I decided to give FCPX a try just for fun. I bought it originally but dismissed it and didn’t even bothered trying the latest update.
My jaw dropped.
This is at full quality playback 1080p. 1 track with transparency PNG mask, 1 track of prores 422 film grain with “Overlay” opacity mode, 1 track with color corrections on a ProRes 444 file. Fade between 2 clips underneath the grain track.
This is not a pre-rendered timeline. No drop frames whatsoever and at full quality. CPU does not go over 24%.
Premiere CS6 is obviously having major optimization issues.
My specs are:
Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz, SSD, 16GB ram, Media on external thunderbolt Raid playback through BMD Ultrastudio 3D
