October 28, 2015 at 7:27 pm in reply to: Some problems with mocha and scaling

I think i’ve found the problem. We’re using alexa footage, which is 2048×1152 for some reason. Precomping the layer to track is not possible, since mocha won’t use that.

The solution i’ve come up with, is apply the current track to my screen, and then link that to a null, which will have a 93.75 scale, which is exactly the value i used to fit the alexa footage to comp size.

I can also do a light render for tracking purposes, and then use that, but i suspect that is not the proper workflow for doing this. how can I track this 2048×1152 thing and have it apply properly in a 1920×1080 composition?

    Thanks in advance!

That worked! Thank a lot. It left me wondering what does the fracture object actually do, technically.
In any case, the problem was solved. I also learned that I can apply deformers to an extrude operation without converting it to an object first, so that’s even better. Thanks again!

Pinned down the origin of the error, though i still don’t understand why it’s happening. The weirdness appears as soon as I place the extrusions on a fracture object. If I press C while they’re inside there, the weirdness begins. Why is the fracture object displacing the caps?

  • Thanks a lot! Now i know something new.

  • Well, for what it’s worth, exporting the images as PNGs makes them work right away. Why does PS treat Tiff and PNG images with transparency differently? Now i’m curious.

  • A shameless bump, and an update:

For what it’s worth, I found the root of the problem. It’s the alpha channel.

For some reason, when exporting my diffuse channel with an alpha channel, by ticking the “alpha channel” tickbox on the regular image tab of the render setttings, gives me the result of after effects defaulting the color interpretation of that particular piece of footage as sRGB, and not letting me edit it.
If I export everything without an alpha channel, It works just fine.

This will definitely bring me future headaches, as most 3d applications I will use will involve lower third animations, and transitions, with motion blur. I don’t believe object buffers will save my life constantly.

    What is going on here?

  • So yeah, apparently it’s the greyed out part of the interpret footage of After Effects that’s causing the problem. I checked a previous composition, where the color had worked out, and i noticed that the color management tab isn’t greyed out for the diffuse pass, and I can change it at will. Why does after effects grey this out? I’m crossposting with the AE forum if that’s ok with the mods.

edit: Imgur album, wetransfer is way too uncomfortable for this
