As you no doubt know, Cinewave is no longer being developed by Pinnacle. FCP5 (let alone 5.1) is not supported by the Cinewave hardware. Most users (including myself) have moved onto alternative capture cards such as Decklink or Kona.

If you want to give a bunch of clips the same scene number, then enter it on the first clip. Select the remaining clps and right-click in the Scene column. You will be able to select any previously entered scene number from the shortcut menu.

I suspect Ralph is logging offline clips, in which case the above tip won’t help much!

That’s a very good point and you’re right, when using CC it is important to have access to the original source levels. Clipping on the output is more tolerable but clipping on the input side is bad news in this situation.

It sounds like you’re using After Effects compatible filters and this is the normal behaviour, there is no easy way to avoid it. It happens because all AE filters work in RGB colour space and put peak white at 100IRE. This means any superwhites on your source clip get clipped off by using an AE filter. At some point or other you’re going to have to legalise your video levels so for most purposes this isn’t a big problem.

Here’s what I don’t get about the matte vs glossy debate. Today I did a very rare thing and tried to use my matte PowerBook outside. It was useless. Very hard to see the screen at all and this was an overcast day.

To get a matte finish on the screen requires the surface to be bumpy, this diffuses any light coming out of the screen and does the same on any light coming into the screen (i.e. sunlight). It follows that the image is less “pure” on a matte screen than a glossy one because it is being diffused. So why do I read this stuff about matte screens providing better colour rendition than glossy ones? From seeing both screens in the flesh, the glossy ones look far better. Or am I missing something?!

Yep that’s normal. Option-dragging only works on entire clips rather than a selected range, even though it looks as if it might because you do get the + symbol.

Copy/paste is one way to go. Another technique is to drag the selected range to a bin and then drag back to the timeline.
