I’m a bit new to FCP, coming from avid and I’m noticing that when I apply any 3rd party plug-in to a shot, that anything over 100IRE is getting clipped to 100 and anything below 0IRE is clipped to 0. This does not happen with any of the FCP native filters, just 3rd party. I don’t have any type of limiters on, this is just what I see on our external waveform. If the filter is removed it goes back normal, but as soon as it is applied the shot gets clipped, rendered or not. Is there a setting that can fix this or is this a known problem. I’ve searched the archives and can’t find any info on it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    best regards,

It sounds like you’re using After Effects compatible filters and this is the normal behaviour, there is no easy way to avoid it. It happens because all AE filters work in RGB colour space and put peak white at 100IRE. This means any superwhites on your source clip get clipped off by using an AE filter. At some point or other you’re going to have to legalise your video levels so for most purposes this isn’t a big problem.

The one that worries me the most is color finesse 2. I would much prefer to have all the info there to work with for color correction and then deal with broadcast safe levels afterwards, but it looks like for this particular workflow, there might not be another choice. I just like to have all of my highlight detail to work with.

That’s a very good point and you’re right, when using CC it is important to have access to the original source levels. Clipping on the output is more tolerable but clipping on the input side is bad news in this situation.
