I figured out what it was. There’s an option called “24 @ 25” under “rate” in the Timecode setting, so instead of 24 it was set to 24@25. There was an assistant at the shoot who converted all the RED files to prores and then the director actually prepped the project for me. He thought that the assistant made a mistake by creating 25fps prores files from the RED files so he took them into cinema tools and converted them to 24 and provided them to me to cut from (we’re about to prep for finishing). After noticing the 23.98 frame rate and then the 25 frames and changing it to 24, I asked him to make sure that he’s seeing the same frame as I am in the original RED files. He said that it looks like the camera was accidentally set to a 25 timebase, recording at 24, so no it doesn’t. I don’t have the original RED files, so I didn’t know that this was the case. The solution might be to get the original converted prores clips (at 25fps) back and overcut?

It’s for a low-budget short film…which is usually the kind of work that has some kind of technical mess-up whether in production or post (in this case, both), so i’m not surprised, but unfortunately, the client is a big one with a real deadline coming up, so I’m hoping to figure something out quickly.

It seems to be working now. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for your help!

My clips were shot on the Canon 5D which records @ 30fps, not 29.97…so yes, I wanted to keep it at 30fps. I obviously didn’t look through the application very well before attempting the reelname change. I didn’t adjust the “Setup” to be at 30. That’s where the problem occurred. I tested it out again, and it worked fine.
As for your comment re: changing the reel name in the project and getting that warning, I couldn’t tell you either why it didn’t stick. I changed the reel name, got the warning, trashed some user preferences bc I thought they were corrupt based on some settings that I wasn’t able to change, and the reel names went away. Inexplicable, but it happened. That’s why I was trying to edit the QT Reel Names using your application.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Ok, maybe i should be posting to the “basic” forum. so, you’re right about “CMD F9, CMD F10”, but for the toggling, i’m trying to see a “viewer timeline”.

  • look how quickly wishes come true. although, i will say that this isn’t incorporated into the product, but thank God for 3rd party apps.
    i’ll add a replacement wish:
    – a way to select multiple transitions and modify the duration or transition alignment

  • – ability to toggle between the source and canvas timelines like in the Avid, and being able to cut in the clip rather than the nested clip without having to command-drag it into the sequence
    – a “find in bin” option where i can find the bin that holds my sequence
    – a way to link “system settings” to a project

FCP is so fickle. it works then it doesn’t. so i did a couple tests. i brought the clip from the drive onto my main HD, brought it into a new project and changed the reel name, trashed prefs, opened FCP…reel name gone. i did it again, and it stayed. using the original project, the original external drive, changing the reel name, trashing prefs, opening up the project, the reel name stayed. WHAT???? now why would FCP do this? it seems completely unreliable, and i don’t really want to change all the reel names to find later that the names will disappear.

What do you mean by “bad files”? I don’t think I have any bad files. I think there were some minor preference issues that wouldn’t allow me to change my start timecode. Once I trashed my preferences, I was able to change the start timecode. And now the reel info is gone. Are you saying that the reel info should have remained even after I trashed my preferences bc the 2 are unrelated? I created a new project, brought in one of my ProRes movie clips, named the Reel, closed the project, trashed my user preferences, re-opened the project, the Reel name is gone. So I’m guessing that that caused the reel info to disappear. Is it just me?

This is what I see in my FCP browser for the clips I mentioned. The Vid Rate isn’t correct based on the playback timecode.

Bouke–Thanks for your response. I didn’t adjust the framerate originally. The strange thing is that when I opened the quicktime, the inspector info said that it was running at 30fps even though I think it was running at 25fps. I adjusted the setting to 30fps, and now my duration is correct, but it looks like I only have 25frames per second. I’m uploading the original, “test1” (with framerate unchanged) and “test2” (with framerate set to 30fps) to your SendIt. Is there a way to keep everything the same but just add the reel name? I think your software can be great, but I’m afraid to adjust all my quicktimes using it right now since it took so long to convert my 5D h.264 quicktimes to proRes quicktimes. Also, is there a way to select a source folder and once the files show up in the list at the bottom, to remove quicktimes that you would like to not be affected? Thanks again!
