    Every seven years, as I recall… 🙂

The plasticizer is migrating out. Some popular remedies include a wipe-down with Windex, a wipe with isopropyl alcohol, and a thick paste of baking soda/water. I’d try these as none of them seem like they’d hurt anything if they fail. WD40 is something else I might try if the first 3 fail.

Marketing and production classes are and should be IMO separate things. If they still run them, Sony’s training school is good. The Maine Media workshops are another long-established one. They are multi-day affairs. I know there are many one day and two-day production workshops out in L.A., they seem to be in constant churn there, and a search will likely turn up something specific to your needs. If you want to stay East Coast, look at Florida and Georgia for similar programs. FullSail offers online programs.

I think YouTube applies some default audio settings of it’s own, which you can’t avoid… or correct me if that’s inaccurate?

I keep fun props from old productions around the office, and a human skull with hinged jaw is one of them. You never know what drawer he’ll turn up in…

Speaking of props, I need to find a deal on a cheap 70’s style disco shirt, the kind with the big open collar, size 3xl or 4xl, but I don’t want to pay a lot for it, like $20-$30, because it’s for a one-time use. Goodwill and Sally got bupkis. Amazon and ebay choices are kinda meager. Taking suggestions.

  • One other aspect of the issue: When schools are involved, beancounters are always nearby.

Macs tend to be more expensive than PC-based suites; I’m generalizing a bit, but, looking at things the way purchasing and procurement people would; on the one hand you have a single-source for the hardware in Apple with FCPX, no flexibility in pricing, getting them serviced and etc. has only a few options…

… and on the other, Adobe’s NLE runs on mac or PC, So Does Blackmagic’s Resolve, and purchasing people have way more options for sourcing the hardware on the PC side, maybe making commodity buys at a discount. They can find hundreds of contractors and vendors on the PC support side, heck their own in-house IT people would probably be tasked, truth be told. There are plenty of PC-oriented places out there where macs are looked on as exotic curiosities.

Apple’s not helping in terms of making it easy for institutional purchasers to order and get bids.

Unless the tapes were already logged before, and someone made decisions based on those logs, it really doesn’t matter… your digitized version is going to become the “official” version to log and cut from now. So you can make the time codes whatever you want them to be, in whatever NLE they end up in. I can’t remember now if there were aftermarket plug-ins to make that happen in FCP7. But I’m pretty confident there’s a way to jam a new, usable time code into footage in FCPX and/or Premiere. Maybe also on ffmpeg, ffworks or maybe Compressor.

Sorry, I can’t take outside jobs on my day job system, and as you know from my first post, my old 7-based suite is now gone.

I kinda wonder if I should sell the boxed set of my old 7-suite to someone who has even more trouble letting go than I do:-)

If you were able to do other work, then no. And I don’t think normal policy would detail a line-item expense for the upload time… if it’s costing you money for that upload, you just build it into your rate, instead of breaking it out as a line item.

I’m of the persuasion that you bill -something- for machine time, if the client’s job is tying it up and preventing it from being used for other billable work. If it’s not in conflict with another job, then the charge would be nothing, or more to the point, not “nothing”, but already built into the calculations you used to create your hourly and day rate in the first place. Machine usage, wear, upkeep and replacement budgeting are all baked into your calculations when first creating your rate. Or they should be. Does that make sense?
