Yes – just go to your Movies/Motion Templates folder, locate the folder for your new template, and copy that entire folder (which contains the Motion project file, any media you included, the preview movie, and the image thumbnails) to the same Motion Templates folder on your target computer.
Next time you launch Motion 5, they will show up in the Project Browser; and next time you launch FCP X, assuming you published your template as a title, transition, effect, or generator – it will show up in the appropriate browser in FCP X.

You haven’t misunderstood anything – I believe you are meant to use the stabilization tools built directly into FCP X – they are based on the same underlying technology.
But the process of sending clips to Motion that we were used to in FCP7 and Motion4 does not currently exist in FCPX/Motion5 – hopefully it will be added.

June 25, 2011 at 8:43 pm in reply to: M4 legacy templates – where are they for Motion 5?The Motion 4 application, along with FCP7 and any others, has not disappeared. It’s been moved to a new folder named Final Cut Studio in your Applications folder.
Your templates are in the same place they have always been – root/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Studio/Motion/Templates.
It’s just that Motion 5 does not reference that location, as it stores all it’s projects in User/Movies/Motion Templates/Compositions.
But you can’t copy them there since they won’t be recognized.
I would, from M5, choose File>Open and navigate to the template you want. I’ve tested this workflow and it works for me.

June 25, 2011 at 5:34 pm in reply to: Motion and After effects -Photoshop compatibilityMotion has been able to open layered Photoshop files as individual layers (with the same layer names as in Photoshop) for years – I believe back to version 2, if not 1. So has AE.
Motion will not open an AE project. Sometimes AE can open a Motion project as a single layer in the AE project if you rename the Motion project extension to .mov – haven’t tried it w/M5 yet…

Matt,
In Motion 5, you have the capability to create Display Aspect Ratio Snapshots,or DARS – for example, create a 16-9 first, then make a 4:3 version. You adjust all your elements for each DARS as needed, and they are stored in that snapshot.
In FCP X, when you add the Motion project to a project, it will then automatically adjust for that DAR.
Duration of Motion projects do matter to some extent but they are managed mostly by build in, build out, and loop markers, and for Transitions, an FCP override option.
And yes, all these subjects are covered in my tutorial – specifically the one on Rigging and Publishing in Motion 5.

However I would recommend following Apple’s advice if you choose to install on the same partition:

I agree that the roundtripping is a huge hole, but when you say it is a standalone app you are missing a major change in how Motion is being used in FCP X. Every single title, transition, effect, and generator in FCP X – either the hundreds of existing ones available in FCP X’s effects browsers, or ONES YOU MODIFY OR CREATE – are Motion projects. Motion, besides being a great standalone motion graphics app (heck new keyer alone is worth the $50 IMHO), is now the development platform for creating fx for FCP X. That is a huge deal because it gives everyone access to creating titles, transition, and effects for FCP X – and the rigging and publishing features extend that capability even further.
