This is normal. Your file’s encoded bounds are 720×480. When you drop the DVD encoding preset on it, as long as the preset is set to Aspect Ratio: 16×9, it will encode how you expect.

Radio typically wants full range levels (average -8 to -12, peaks at 0 dBFs) and 44.1 kHz while TV wants a different range (average -20, peaks -8 to -10 dBFs OR average -24 LKFs). If you’re handing over spots to radio, they’ll usually accept it on CD or as MP3 files – these should be mastered so that it’s not too compressed, and the peak levels hit 0 dBFs.
I assume the reason is because radio is sequencing songs (ripped from CD, peaks at 0) with everything else, so they’d rather not have to do any gain processing on your stuff.

Not sure where Eric’s working, but I can tell you clients don’t like working for a month on a beautiful HD spot and then show up to the audio mix and see crappy compressed SD video on the monitors. That’s just one reason…

Our systems here are using the qualified Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme PCI card for HD video playback. Apple ProRes video is supported, and works perfectly. Don’t know if Mojo DX (I assume DX since you’re talking about HD video) is even supported for Pro Tools video playback.

The software is available from that site in two versions. A free version which I believe only transcodes one clip at a time and a paid version ($50) from the App Store that can do batch conversions and maybe other stuff. I have not used it so I don’t have any experience there.

To make sure Streamclip processes in only progressive frames, all you have to do is make sure you deselect the “Interlaced Scaling” checkbox in the export dialog. Once you do that, Streamclip ignores anything you have set for Upper/Lower. Also, Streamclip is a great batch processor – once you have your setting the way you like it, you can save it as an export preset and then batch transcode all of your footage easily.

My guess is that the H.264 to Apple ProRes conversion that Streamclip does will be about the same results as Compressor’s. Worth a try though.
If still unsatisfied, you might look into 5D to RGB as what looks like a better alternative…

Was the original footage shot 24p with pulldown inserted? I am guessing not, and that it’s actually 59.94 fields per second. The best conversion you can get going to 23.976 will be with hardware such as Teranex VC100. In software land, you can get pretty good results with Compressor, but you need to make sure you turn on the Optical Flow Motion Compensation. That is accessible using Frame Controls – turn Frame Controls ON and choose BEST for Retiming. That will allow Compressor to analyze the frames as a sequence, blend them together, and remove what it intelligently ‘thinks’ can be removed. The results can be extremely usable or just not, so it’s good to choose a couple of short sections to test. If you need help designing an encoding preset, let me know.

The Compressor setting should be a file with a .setting extension. These go in here:
home / Library / Application Support / Compressor
Reopen Compressor and you should see it.

I would say yes. It’s not really a conversion you’re after here. You need a conform. A conform will take your 23.976 fps file and make it play back at 24 fps. A very very slight speed up, but won’t change the quality of the frames at all. You can do this very easily with Cinema Tools. Open your 23.976 fps quicktime file in Cinema Tools, and choose Conform. Set it to 24.0 fps and click OK. Voila, a 24.0 fps quicktime, and look how fast that was. That’s because nothing is changing in your file except the header info that tells it “hey play this at 24 instead of 23.976.” You will notice that the audio sampling rate has changed by the same .1% as well (likely 48048 Hz instead of 48000 Hz). If that’s OK with the delivery spec, then leave it, otherwise you’ll need to resample the audio. This isn’t hard to do, so check in if you need to.
