Thanks – I thought that might be the option but hadn’t had time to test that path. I really didn’t want to be wasting my effort or complicating the project in some unnecessary way.

Awe’re both on the latest version of FCPX but the xml exchange doesn’t work as expected. THe work around was to do color correct on some clips and save the effects on my system and then export& email those effects to my buddy. THat worked perfectly.

he did not have color board corrections assigned to his clips . I should check the versions to be sure we are on the same page.
However I also realize I can save my color board corrections as effects and then share them which would also work assuming we are using the same versions of FCPX. -
I sent an XML exported with general settings to my buddy with color board corrections I made for a clip. He imported the XML and the color board corrections were applied, but when he looked at the settings in the color board with corrections applied to the clip, all settings were at default or zero with the correction applied.

I went with the fusion drive on my similarly spec’ed iMac and have no complaints. The iMac in question gets 4k C300 files, go pro 4 K and all sorts of HD thrown at it. AE, PrePro and FCPX all run well but FCPX is the main editorial software. I do have a thunderbolt raid for media storage and would consider that a requirement.

I have a BMD device ( one of those ultra studio thingies) that has a thunderbolt interface, which I can connect to a J3 player and capture from Beta SP or digibeta. I was using the BMD desktop video software to capture Pro res from tape and then a utility that would make the captured pro res file appear as a file based capture structure to FCPX as a final step before importing into X . This worked pretty well for a heap of captures from legacy beta. For the first round of capture I was trying to get results quickly and this is the route I found. If I go back I may try to work right out of X and see if I can capture or create tape archives directly with X .

Check out what Kinetta Scanners can co with 8mm or super8 . there is more there than one would initially assume.

How long do you want to depend on your back ups? long enough to get through post., or longer?
LTO tape is the real long term back up solution . -

Super 8 is a very niche item and actually a pretty lousy image unless you have your own Kinetta scanner to digitize your shot film.
Film is pricey at at super 8 level while it has a look, it can never step outside that look and be better, offer shallow DOF or better image quality associated with larger film formats.
If there were a road sign for this endeavor it would read “Dead End” -
I switched out my 2006 Mac Pro early in 2015 for a 5k iMac- Phew. THough I have to say in the Mac pro’s defencse that over 9 years the amount of downtime I had with that beast was very close to zero.
