From reading your posts, it sounds like you’re a “glass half empty” kind of guy.
Following your logic, the post production industry is going to wither and die tomorrow. There will be no more high quality work done anywhere, and if you’re over 21, you’re too old to work in this business.
I see a different future!
The tools are ever changing. I didn’t start out my career editing on a Mac, and I’d bet when all is said and done, I’ll be using something else years from now. So what! Who knows what kind of developments are brewing in Cupertino or elsewhere. I’d rather contemplate the challenges of editing my next show, than worry about what kind of computer I’ll be using.

If this is a “power issue”, then it’s time to man up and tell them where to stick their “encryption”.
They are totally out of line here. This is the kind of attitude that gives IT deparments such a bad rep.
If you can’t get any results “mano a mano”, then go over their head to the person who controls the money and explain how much MORE MONEY this stupid idea will cost the company. That should shut them down in a hurry. I wouldn’t count on any tech support after that, but from the sounds of it, that may be a blessing!!!!Mark

Tell your IT dept to spend the money on a VERY strong LOCK for your office door! That would go alot further towards securing your “media” than encrypting the drives.
I love our IT guys (really, they’re great at what they do), but I don’t let ’em touch the editing systems.

After dealing with this “10 per cent difference” upon rendering, we bought hardware legalizers. Nothing like a hardware “clamp” to guarantee you’ll be legal.
At a certain point we stopped trying to trouble shoot, acknowledged that it’s a problem, and moved on to the solution (hardward legalizers). Life’s too short!

Within a few hours of this news I’ve already received offers from other post houses to “Come here to finish your project!” I picked up a NTSC to PAL conversion order from Matchframe just yesterday! Whew! Glad we got it out of their vaults before they padlocked the doors. Anyone wanna buy a used Davinci? Cheap?

What Martin is referring to is that Spotlight and X-SAN just didn’t work in early versions of X-SAN.
Frankly, it still can be quite sketchy, so many people running large shared storage set ups prefer to disable spotlight as the default position.Mark
