    Desktop = system drive.

Opening and using the FCP project from your desktop means that you’re taxing the system drive for BOTH system resources AND FCP project data. It’s not an ideal situation. Chances are you can get away with it, but if you ever start experiencing poor performance, this may be the cause.

Best practices are to separate the the system drive from everything else. Ideally, your project would be saved and read off of any other drive available.

    BOB,

You should make a T-Shirt that says,
“‘I’m configured for REAL TIME SUSTAINABILITY”
    and wear it to NAB!

    Not really.

Listen to all those “provisional specs”. Sounds like they’re willing to enable FCP to work ONLY well enough to compare UNfavourably to Avid. Why bother? If you’re starting anew, get a system that’s optimized for FCP, not one that will just “tolerate” it.

Now, don’t even get me started on the “EOL” of Apple’s X-Serve!

Pro Res plain will be fine. You do NOT need HQ. HQ is way overkill for material originating in the
    XDCAM format.

A USB drive would be fine if you can fit it. If you’re mailing, a SSD drive would be fine too, since
it’s impervious to “shocks” while in transit.

Best to call someone at your destination and see what works for them.

    Mr. Weiss,

While I normally agree with your sage advice, in this case I must respectfully disagree.

When you say, ” Save as… That will screw you up faster than a whirling Dervish on meth.” I have NOT found that to be the case. We use “save as” on a regular basis and have NOT found it to be a problem.

    Here’s what we do.

Start project: Name it “My Project”. This becomes the “Base” project.

Every day, at the end of the day, we “save as” but append a date to it. So tomorrow’s work would be “My Project 2-13”, the day after, “My Project 2-14” etc. That way you have an instant archive tree that you can navigate back to if something goes wrong. These “save as” are done to THREE places: Locally (media drive) globally (shared Storage) and “Mobililly” to a USB thumb drive. There is NO excuse for lost work.
If you lose your work it’s YOUR fault, not FCP.

I agree that the desktop is NOT the proper place to save ANYTHING.

Do all your clips have “reel numbers”?

Only two systems? No problem. Buy an ethernet cable, plug ’em together, and poof! You’re sharing.

For anything beyond two systems, you’re in for a much more complex solution.

February 9, 2011 at 4:45 am in reply to: Presentation about Reality Television

    Scott,

If you think this presentation is going to help your career you’ve made a major miscalculation.

First, I doubt any producer would want to hire someone who makes a point of trashing the
genre as “fake” and “manipulative”. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Second, while I’m sure you’ll claim “fair use” for the clips shown in the presentation, I’ll bet lawyers from the studios who financed those shows have a different opinion of your use.

Third, you cite “coming up” promo editing as evidence of “viewer manipulation”. Really? Please give the audience credit for knowing the difference.

Finally, while there certainly are some shows guilty employing the kinds of tricks you “reveal”, please don’t paint every show with the same brush. It’s a cheap shot to conclude, “:When you watch TV, remember it’s all fake… They’re trying to manipulate you”. There is a difference between real emotion captured on camera, and “acting”. I’d suggest that the audience DOES know the difference.

Here’s perhaps the best explanation of why typical “IT centric” systems DON’T WORK for video.
