Even more important than the financial impact was the fact that the first Adrenalines off the assembly line simply DIDN’T WORK (as promised). I can fill up a book with details if anyone is interested. Up until this point AVID had a reputation for bulletproof reliability. Adrenaline sank that reputation like a boat anchor.

So… many people concluded, there was NOTHING to lose by switching to FCP. It was cheaper, and performance wise, NO WORSE than Adrenaline. Shortly thereafter, FCP updates leveled the playing field as far as features. Some would say FCP “exceeded” the feature set of AVID, but that’s just my opinion.

In LA there’s “alpha dogs .tv” which has something called the digital service station which is set up to do exactly what you’re asking.

For budgeting purposes don’t forget that most delivery contracts require many different versions: texted, texless, split trk audio, “clean” audio and “dirty” audio (bleeped). This is a much more time consuming task than just making dubs. Each version is a unique output.

My suggestion is to take whatever you were thinking and multiply it times FIVE!!!! Seriously. You’ll thank me later.

I have some suggestions for you, but you,ve got to be willing to “think different”. Ready?

First, get rid of the idea that ALL of your media needs to be in a single project… It doesn’t !
Second, use the finder level for organizing your media.
Third, go buy CATdv. If you don’t know about it, there’s a forum for it right here on the cow. Check it out. You can have CATdv and FCP open at the same time. Switch back and forth between the two . Search in CATdv, edit in FCP. Try it. I think you,ll like it.

If this isn’t a workable idea, consider multiple projects based on media type: interviews, b-roll, scenes, etc. You can have them all open simultaneously.

We have over a hundred seats of FCP, and I can tell you that this will be a
MAJOR PAIN IN THE PATOOTIE!!!

I’m sure that I’m not the only one in this situation. I know that there are educational institutions
with much larger installs than ours.

So…. I’d love to hear about Apple’s plan to handle multi-users.
