Sounds like you should read up on the compressor and limiter filters.
You might also want to look into a free program called The Levelator.

I would also bet that your footage is in a compressed codec that your computer is having trouble decoding on the fly.
Since it would be better to have your footage on an external drive, perhaps it would be a great opportunity for you to run your footage through Compressor, converting it to ProRes (NOT ProRes HQ) and set your destination to an external drive.

For what it’s worth, I never bought any manuals or any other how-to materials. Final Cut shipped with a tutorial DVD. I viewed that and picked up the (very) basics. Then I just plowed in and started editing.
Hit a roadblock, Googled it, read how-to articles, listened to podcasts, watched tutorial videos, even occasionally RTFM (online, of course.) Rinse and repeat.
You’ve already found the Cow, so you’re already light years ahead of where I started. 😉
Just do it.
