I hope to get a moment sometime next week to try figure if there is anything wrong with the hardware, in the meantime a complete reformat and reinstall of system and apps has done the trick.

My IT dept could have been to blame for the mess on Weds… a guy not very familiar with OSX was messing with my permissios and keychains and user accounts to sort the way Entourage was pestering me for a password and never remembering it. Rebooting a few hours after he left rendered FCP unuseable, so it my have been his tinkering.

Thank you guys for your help, and great post Paul.

Being 8 hours or so out of sync with each other means i was already sitting with my IT guy early this morning too early for the advice… basically nothing he did could sort it.

I eventually installed OSX without reformatting (less drastic but less sure) Reinstalled FCP and Motion and then the Aja drivers, and it worked, more or less… some motion projects showed up on the FCPtimeline as OFFLINE and half of one of them had the composite, the other half was red offline. Weird.

I will do a reformat when i get a break in a couple of weeks.
I am rendering the final video (thank the gods!)

Hello again Jeremy,

I was wondering, the Kona does display colour bars on the PAL monitor as expected, is that sufficient evidence that it is working ok. I ran the conflict software and that came up clean.

Anything else I can try?

BTW, the long error report that OSX provides when FCP crashes does have the Aja mentioned in the first line after the type of error, but then it begins with an A, so thats possibly why.

System was fine for 3 months… what could i have done wrong with the card installation that could suddenly go wrong now?

I have a brand new 8 core, 4gig ram, Studio 2, Kona v4

Is there any Kona diagonstic which will tell me if the card is 100% ok? I have to do this job today and have the terrible choice of either converting all my Kona codec stuff to native mac codec, or reinstalling OSX and FCP…

my system is only a few months old, now i am faced with having to tell the client they cannot tweak their show for the first several hours today while I completely reinstall OSX.

in 15 years of NLE editing on PC i never once had such a complete mess… really disappointing.

Ive pretty much given up.
FCP reinstalled on a new OSX profile, and the same errors etc.
The only thing left it seems is to reinstall OSX.

So uninstalling Aja allows FCP to load but Motion will not load, and the Motion clips show up as white.

Reinstalling the Aja software brings me back to square 1 with crashing on loading.

Motion cannot be started at all.

I have just completed a 2.5 hour re-install and have one more hour before my last train home, gotta get it done somehow.
